For the most part, it's your imagination. But, the fact is that a ball with more spin will seem affected by a miss more than a ball with less spin. But that's mostly cause the more spin you apply to your shot, the more it's affected by the wind, etc. For example, the difference between a dinged 200y shot with a 2 spin ball compared to a 5 spin ball can easily be around 10 yards (guesstimate) in a heavy crosswind. Now, if you miss the ding on the "wrong" side, the result is even more drastic.
