The Perfect Shot
As I stand in the tee box I am brim full of confidence, I
have played this course so many times I know every bump & hollow of the
fairway. Too far to the left and I will have a difficult approach shot to the
green, too far right and a bounce on the slope will end up in the rough, I know
the exact right spot to land. I check the wind speed & direction, I am
still confident despite a moderate headwind that I will carry the fairway
bunker, I will have to compromise a little on my landing spot for the sake of guaranteeing
avoiding the rough.
I adjust the spin on the ball, almost full backspin because
there isn’t much fairway to work with due to the dogleg, can’t afford much of a
run on. I can give it full power, now all I have to do is get the aim just
right. I set the marker to almost the exact spot, anticipating to click just
past the ding to help fight the cross wind.
I have hit this shot a hundred times so I am confident that
I have left nothing to chance, I don’t want to let my partner down in this
alternate shot match. The other team will think I am slow taking 40 seconds to
take my drive but I am after perfection.
I click the mouse & slide it forward to fill the power
meter, hold it for a second and as I exhale slowly I release the shot while
staring intently at the ding zone. I am so focused that the meter seems to
drain in slow motion despite the fact that I am using free balls. Here it
comes, 50%, 30%, nearly there.... Time to click NOW NOW NOW........ Nooooooooooooooooo. – Disaster.
Just as I was about to click the meter stalled, I couldn’t stop
the click, I saw it stall, just for a fraction of a second, but I couldn’t stop
the click. I have clicked way too early, the worst possible outcome as the ball
sails, assisted now by the crosswind, over all that lovely short grass into
deep brush. OMG 70%, that’s it, may as well concede now.
I see the orange chat box flashing; I am just waiting for
the harsh comment from a stranger, who I am calling my partner.
I click & read “” What happened P””
I reply with the only comment that I can - “”I hit the perfect shot, but I WAS METERED””
Merry Christmas to all & to all a goodnight.
