From time to time I've seen that some clubs have mentioned they have a "handicap system" which allows players of different tiers, levels etc. to compete on a more level playing field.

Currently I know of three systems that I have seen that are used.   The one our Club, (New Haven CC) uses that is similar to the USGA system based on an average of your last 25 rounds played - another that I believe was developed by Kelly (Priesum) that is based on various factors applied to each player's tier, level and average score - and one that Sue (sueomeara) uses for her CC that is also based on tier and average score.

I would be very interested to know if other clubs are using a handicap system and if so what that system might be.

    Hi Wayne,

At the Fair Play Golf Club we use a system similar to the one you use, except we base it only on the last 10 rounds played.  Since many members play more AS or MP games, going back to find 25 RR might not be possible.  We also keep an eye out for sandbagging to increase handicap, and we never announce in advance what the cutoff date will be for rounds to be included in a give month.

thanks phred.... the rounds we use are only those played in our "major" tournaments that we run each month...and we keep both single play and unlimited play handicaps.   You can find an explanation of our system on DaddyKat's profile page...there are links as to how to set it up etc.  I worked with Kat when she was putting it together and while I like it, it can be somewhat confusing to the non "real golf" players who aren't familiar with the USGA system.

...and yes, we also have a handicap committee that can "adjust" a players handicap if necessary....lol

    Appreciate the feedback.

    Wayne

Glad to pass it along.  We use all ranked rounds, including all tournament, RG, Virtual Tour and bracket rounds.  That being the major difference between the two clubs.

The Peoples Club uses a modified USGA Handicap system all done by a computer program one of our Directors wrote..

    The modifications include:

    1. The average of the best 10 out of the last 15 CC Tournaments based on the generated HCI for the course (rather then 10 of 20)
    2. The 15 must be in the last 120 days (rather then 365)
    3. No more then 3 of the 15 can be on the same course where the front 9, back 9 and full 18 are considered different courses (rather then allowing all to be on the same course)
    4. We generate a WGT Course Rating and Slope for each course and tee rather then the USGA published rating and slope.

It works well for us and due to the programming effort put into it takes little time at all to update member's HCIs and just a couple of mouse clicks to apply the member's HCI to the tournament being played.
