YankeeJim: Don't let it turn into a habit because as you progress you'll find yourself upgrading to the better clubs and then you'll really get in trouble. Miss the ding smart. :-)
Another thing to consider when intentionally missing the ding is that the ball will run out much farther if using no spin. If using backspin then distance becomes tough to gauge. I do miss the meter sometimes on purpose but there are a very select few holes that I use this approach (pun intended).
Back to the original question. I tend to blur my vision slightly and focus on the ding line while watching the swing meter advance with my peripheral vision. This makes me more susceptible to being bitten by meter glitches, but I find when I start missing the ding often when meter is good, I am watching the swing meter slide all the way down instead of focusing on the "excellent" line.
