The only time purchased balls do not deteriorate / get lost is while you are putting.
Other than that, you use them til you lose them where ever you are.

Worse yet, is when you have them stashed at home and after searching high and low they are nowhere to be found. This is the worst way to lose balls because you can't watch them disappear.
to hell with finding them on the golf course in real life...i just have to look in the bushes around the front and back yard at home....sometimes, i'm scared to cut the yard...I keep seeing in my mind's eye a dunlop titanium going through neighbor's french doors...lol
