    Hi folks.

The reason I'm writing this post is because I need help for the 2nd hole on the front 9 at St. Andrews. My drive isn't the problem, it's always my approach to the green. I can't get on the green with any consistency. That slope at the front of the hole is a big problem, and I end up over shooting the green trying to avoid it. I play the front 9 decent enough, but this hole has been a big pain, and I was wondering if anybody had any advice for this troubling 2nd shot. Thanks in advance.

How about laying up your second shot short of the green, allowing yourself enough yardage for a fullish wedge shot (with your ATV) to get close to the pin. Probably will rule out a birdie but par here is a good score.

Its a tricky one even for the best.  Best option is to go past the hole and holed it as much as you can, avoid hitting the slope before it as only kicks on, You need the top equipment and balls to get within 5 ft.

+1 for the left pin, variation for the right pin being, stay far right and try to hit it pin-high.

Any long putt straight up from the back (or the right) gives a good chance for a Par. Just leave it a tad short. Top players may know how to birdie it.

*Land on the top of the mound with full backspin in the left pin position, this is several yards short of the pin maybe 6-8 yards( the top of the slope where it starts downhill toward the pin), if you land correctly your ball will damn near stop, then roll down towards the hole and often times get within tap in distance.. The right pin position is more wind oriented, if you can land the ball on the flat in between the mound and the stick with full backspin you may want to try that first,  a short of the ding or pull shot may help you to stick the ball into that small landing area that will accept a shot without the ball bouncing off the back of the green..

There are players that play this hole very well that can explain it better than I can, and probably have a better strategy, but I usually use those options on the left and right pin placements with results depending on my ability to hit the shot correctly which is not always all that great, so I know the frustration on this particular hole.. One tip is to not give up on that left pin position when you miss it long >you can make that putt if you take your time> give a good aim and add a little distance to what WGT says you might want to hit there.. good luck. certainly has been a frustrating hole for most players I think.. I look forward to checking back here to see what the better players have to say about playing this hole, I could use a little help being more consistent on #2 as well..

He has Med/High irons, he's not stopping anything. His best best is to go over and come back. A pitch or flop uphill from a long over is easy to get up and down to save par. Might even catch a birdie once in a while.  :-)

@Onzie-When it comes time to upgrade your stuff, get High lofted clubs. You have a flat, fast landing trajectory with those irons and that makes it tough to hold greens. High lofted clubs drop down softer so it's easier to control landings.
