Why is it that a clean 6-iron or 7-iron,etc. hit out of a fairway bunker only goes minimal distance. This is one of the unrealistic parts of the game that is baffling to me

No disagreement here. But it's been noted (many times) before on these boards. I seriously doubt that it's ever going to change.

Even so, given how easy the game can be in other aspects, which are equally unrealistic, I don't have an issue with it. Besides, from a lot of fairway bunkers (not all, to be sure) a person can easily save par.

almost always, depends on your lie... just like real life if you plug a ball 40/50 bunker... you might as well wedge it out.

if you get a ball that rolls into a bunker or sand and get a fluffy lie  like 10% sand then you can and will get good club on the ball and get a very playable distance out of the shot.

sometimes you take your medicine and other times you still have a good shot into the green.  isn't that what some of the guys on tour have to do as well if they face a big lip or a pot bunker ... in both cases you make the best choice to minimize the mistakes you will make.

sometimes wedging it out and throwing your next approach close still saves par or even makes birdie on a par 5.

    Hi

I try not to make it too obvious, but sometimes throwing it out and wedging my next approach close works even better.

    Cheers!
