toripyne:ifixfpcs...not sure how to check to see which kernal I'm using. I'm definitely in over my head here, but I will figure it out eventually
Linux is not "exactly" an operating system. It is an operating system kernel that is responsible for recognizing hardware. This "kernel" allows the operating system distros such as Fedora, SUSE, Opera, Redhat and Ubuntu to use the hardware.
In other words: If someone asks you which operating system you have installed, you tell them you use Opera, which is Linux based. Or you can say you use Ubuntu, which is Linux based, ect.ect....
If someone asks you which operating system you have and you say Linux, they will probably ask you which distro do you use. To which you would reply Ubuntu or Redhat or Opera. I hope this helps clear up what I was asking earlier.
I just re-read your original post and noticed that you were using Ubuntu. There have been other people talking about problems with multiplayer, just wondering if Opera has worked out any better than Ubuntu or do the problems persist?
something else in your post: you didn't want to install Windows because of antivirus. I would just install windows and get a free antivirus such as Security Essentials or Avira. I don't run an antivirus while I play. the only thing running on my rig is windows and WGT game window. I don't have any problems AT ALL.
anymore questions, just lemme know.

Linux is not 'exactly' an operating system? That statement is so at odds with reality that I'm not sure it's even worth a debate. But this might be fun. I love easy targets.
Linux is PRECISELY an operating system. There are different 'flavors' of linux, which you enumerate. You are confusing 'Linux' with the current linux kernel. So anxious were you to show your brain, you tripped and showed your ass instead.
To find which release of the linux kernel you are using, go to a command prompt and type:
uname -r
Any idiot can catch a few terms off google and troll in places like this trying to impress people with cute words like 'distro'. Linux is not only an operating system, it is far more powerful than windows ever dreamt of being. Advising someone to use Windows when they could use linux is like advising a toddler to play in the freeway. And if you truly believe in that advice, you are someone actually playing with the toddler in the freeway.
Please, do folks a favor and don't talk about linux. You clearly don't have any real clue what you're talking about.
