Curious.  I just got a new computer and installed Linux because I didn't want to deal with windows and getting all the virus protection that needs to go along with it.

but I've been having problems doing multi-player games.  Game freezes up after 2 holes and I have to close the game window.  Seems fine when I'm playing by myself.

Using Ubuntu and Chromium web browser.  Mozilla was worse. Any advice is appreciated.

Development for Linux always lags behind Win.

I don't use it for web work or WGT but this article may be of interest. It suggests that FF is working on an updated, faster FF release, and that Opera 10 is favoured right now.

I think all you can probably do is try them all, including this one.

What version of the linux kernel are you using...

WGT is supposed to work well with Ubuntu.

    just saying.

Linux is not "exactly" an operating system.  It is an operating system kernel that is responsible for recognizing hardware.  This "kernel" allows the operating system distros such as Fedora, SUSE, Opera, Redhat and Ubuntu to use the hardware.

In other words:  If someone asks you which operating system you have installed, you tell them you use Opera, which is Linux based.  Or you can say you use Ubuntu, which is Linux based, ect.ect....

If someone asks you which operating system you have and you say Linux, they will probably ask you which distro do you use. To which you would reply Ubuntu or Redhat or Opera.  I hope this helps clear up what I was asking earlier.

I just re-read your original post and noticed that you were using Ubuntu.  There have been other people talking about problems with multiplayer, just wondering if Opera has worked out any better than Ubuntu or do the problems persist?

something else in your post:  you didn't want to install Windows because of antivirus.  I would just install windows and get a free antivirus such as Security Essentials or Avira.  I don't run an antivirus while I play.  the only thing running on my rig is windows and WGT game window.  I don't have any problems AT ALL.

    anymore questions, just lemme know.

    Roy,

thanks for the informative post.  I appreciate it.  I will try partitioning (or whatever the lingo is) and go with windows for WGT.

Tried Opera, and I could play a multi-player game, but I couldn't type anything in the chat window.

when you get it set...lemme know and i'll go over some tweaks for windows that will help.

I know people are having problems but these computers are constantly check for packets and sending packets.  i'm pretty sure these meter problems are associated with it.  people mention getting new computers, but that's no better.  they are loaded with crapware and bloatware.  when i play, my rig only has 21 processes running in the background.  I'd be happy to help ya out with it when you get set.

Yeah, I've noticed the bloatware running on the old PC and don't know enough about how they work to know what to shut down.

Thanks so much Roy!  I appreciate the help a lot!
