Sider, it sounds as though you have no toolbar above your message box, which means you may be typing directly into an HTML editor, which ignores white space and line breaks.
You don't have to understand any of that to correct it though. Just type this out at the start of your message...
<p style="white-space:pre-wrap">
...then follow that with your message. Make new lines and paragraphs as you normally would by hitting enter, and they should stick when you post your message.
