  I was recently gifted from another player I have not played with yet. (Not at all sure I want to get my posterior rearranged) However I want to thank the individual, personally I can't seem to find a way to PM him, however, I will take this opportunity to thank ( SamSpayed ) for his gift. is it possible to chat without being engaged in a game?

  You can write on his wall , by going to his profile , it won’t be private as wall postings can be seen by everyone. Or you can friend him , then send him a private message . 
  in fact a few days ago I thanked samspayed for a gift by writing on his wall . !
