Here's one you won't see in common areas- tip for approach shots using short irons and in particular wedges when you are between clubs. WGT tips... state the punch shot is used in windy conditions to get under the wind and that shot reduces the yardage of the club by approx 1/3. Well punch shot can and should be used in many instances not just windy ones. The approach shot with wedges.. I carry a 98yrd, 77yrd, and 50yrd wedge. Lets say I am sitting out 83 yrds from the hole, that leaves me a choice- I can hit the 98yrd wedge and try to judge the meter slacking off my backswing 15 yrds, or I can hit the 77yrd wedge with full top spin and hope it rolls the 5 yrds, which it wont unless there is green slope. Well there is a 3rd choice- hit the 98 yrd wedge with the punch shot- distance is 83 yards. Generally with full backspin it will stop like a normal wedge shot, with full top spin it will roll 5yrds or so depending on green speeds and slope.... It is easier to hit a punch shot using the full meter backswing then to try and guess how much to reduce backswing.... Even if the punch shot distance is off 5 yrds- if its long 5yrds pretty easy to guess reducing backswing- if its 5 yrds short hit the top spin it will roll... anything off more then that then the normal club hit will be closer to the distance you need.... Also when in heavy rough or fescue use punch shot to hit out, will punch reduces yardage of the club- it will increase distance out of that thick turf.
