IMHO part of the reason for not performing so well on the actual course is the lack of planning of each shot.
A GPS with course maps and distances to landing points just like on WGT would help most real golfers.

If you plan how you will play each hole beforehand and work out your lay up distances then chances are your score will more closely match your WGT score.
