    Almost never use the chip unless I'm within 6 yds, use the pitch all the time.  It takes a lot of practice to get so you can depend on it but once you figure it out it can be deadly in make shots around the green.

    You can absolutely hit pitches less than 70%. I do it all the time w/ my 50 yd ATV. 

    But agree that the chart is not really something you wanna follow once you get the basic ideas down.

    pic on left...pitch/ flop (don't chip)                    pic on right...chip (is fine)

     

    green speeds, elevation changes, wind, lie and type of ball need to be accounted for in all short game shots.  But for beginners...

    It actually is a good example of what would happen if you chipped from the first spot. :-)
