Pay For Balls.....Bahhh.. Humbug

    Last week I wrote a thread about using the G12-D balls after the WGT graciously gave me some Nike balls to try out.

    It seemed to screw with my game to stop using the  12-D balls and using the Nike balls.

    I took some suggestions on balls, the 12-S, the SD, the Tour S.....I was even thinking that I would be salivating until I could get to a certain level and get the GI-SD2s I thought. 

    So, I took the advice of another posting member from my thread. I went back to the unlimited balls. He said he really couldn't tell the difference.

    Well, I did so today. My game was in a funk and no ball seems to cure it. Today, I saw what that other member seemed to say, the unlimited balls are just about as good as you can get. In fact, I got a decreased roll on some greens by just adjusting my club stroke strength that made up for any added spin I may have gotten from S balls.

    It is the clubs dang it! The Clubs! These G-10 Pings are doing the work that the "pay for with credit balls" were supposed to be helping to do.

    I guess I started using the pay for balls when I didn't own the Ping G-10s. 

    No more buying different virtual balls for me. Unless they come up with some ball that will stop on a dime.....I am using the the unlimited balls from now on.

    I can't remember who you were, I could go look , but hey, the point is that it is the clubs dang it....just the clubs that give you that backspin and distance.

    Glory hallelujah, I am saved from having to see that nasty dialogue card coming up saying, WGT has decided to take this ball out of play. ....or... You only have one more stinkin ball of this type, time to pony up and get some more balls.

    You know, I would have never started thinking this way until I got those Nike balls. I couldn't tell the difference between them and the D balls I was using. If anything, they stunk........and for 450 credits......come on ....Give me a Break!

    Thanks for the crummy Nike balls WGT, you opened my eyes to the fact that the unlimited balls are the bomb.

    It's the combination of the 2 that does it. That's what the Spin attribute is. The ones that "stop on a dime" are the higher level clubs with the Callaways or Nikes.

    Your technique of shortening the swing to control the roll out at the end is a basic swing in golf. You can't always stick the ball close so to be able to do it this way is a good thing-run it up to the pin. Legends that play G10s are good at this and know where to use it.

    However, there are serious limits to how effective you can consistently play this way because it takes extreme knowledge of all the approaches WHEN you have room to do it. Holes with pins set in the front of the green need something that will stop the ball and that's where the combination of ball and club comes in.

    I use the Callaway (s) ball with the higher clubs and use very little spin and the ball is very controllable to include stopping right away. I used to use the G10s and there's no comparison.  :-)

    What Callaway balls do you use?

    I might give them a try. The Nike was nothing to hoot and holler about. I found it weird actually. I have never seen a ball so crazy on a first bounce. It was like a superball hitting on concrete or like your drive hitting a walking path on St. Andrews 18th hole.

    I might try the Callaway but heck, I just enjoy the game and it was starting to bug the snot out of me when I had a ball with plenty of hits left on it and the ball was taken out of play. I never got that. That was like stealing. So, I don't have that frustration now.

    One guy told be that one Legend still uses the beginner putter and unlimited balls.

    I agree that knowing the hole & how the ball will roll on a green from an approach shot is very important, but, all in all, I am not trying to be the best here. I just want to hit under par & enjoy the game.

    I have noticed that since I have quit using pay balls, my overall rating is not going down like it did when I have a good round. I just shot 2 under on nine holes and my rating stayed the same. I am still getting used to the unlimited balls again but they are just as good as the pay balls so far with the G10 Pings. I am getting a little bit of a shorter distance that is effecting my approach but as as far as hitting the green, the unlimited ball is better in my opinion than any of the WGT , Srixon, or Nike balls I have used on the greens.

    At the Master Level, I agree.

    I played the G10's through to Legend, in fact won my first RG as a Legend with them and Tour SD balls.

    That said, as a Master, you are not faced with a plethora of long iron shots.

    Just have fun with them now, but I think as you advance in Tiers and want to be competitive, you'll see the need for (gasp) better clubs than the G10's, and better balls.

    Yep, I have been thinking I might as well get the G20 Pings and start getting used to them. I am eyeing the new Ping putter as well.

    The difference between the G20 & G10 clubs is significant. I think WGT finally realized that people could not enjoy the game with super speed meters......the older selection of irons were just higher and higher meter speed type of sets and now they have two set, supposedly better than my Pings, with slower meter speeds. Bitchin does help it seems. They finally listened.

    I will see how these unlimited balls feel for a while more and then get the New Ping irons & woods. Then, if I get accustomed to these balls with these clubs, I can only do better with other balls.

    Maybe if I *** enough they will come out with an incredible ball that will last the max of five dots.  Then I can think of switching back to pay balls.

    I just don't get it that none of the pay balls will last more than two full rounds of golf.....maybe.

    This game provides us many different combinations to be successful. There is not one right way to play. It's how you like to play the game that determines your fun. I for one love being able to stick a 210 yard iron shot like a dart. Sometimes the tailwind will not allow you to do it, but that what makes this game fun. 

    We are very lucky to have many different ways to play this game that is free.

    Callaway (s), the cheapest good ball.  :-)

    FWIW, Moon, knowing what your club/ball combo can do is more important than what they can do. Find one you like and stick with it. The Nikes are great but you pay for mistakes. That Callaway spinner has more spin than you'll ever need but what I like is how they work without the spin. You're getting good at choking your shots so try that ball using that technique without spin until you get to know how it works. Then start playing with the spin and you'll get it.  GL
