Many of us know that the wind is not consistent.  I know the layout of bethpage like the back of my hand, and kiawah you can often see the next hole and which direction it goes.  But when you step off the green on one hole, the wind on the next is a complete crap shoot.  Can we get a course wind, and not a hole by hole wind?

Perfect example, Kiawah 16, 17, 18.  All run from green to tee, in the same direction to the clubhouse.  The ocean is just a sand dune away to the east of those holes.  Yet, you get a wind going to the ocean (will very rarely happen) on 16, a wind in the face and from the ocean on 17, and a down wind on 18.  Each of those holes lie in a similar south to north direction, the wind should be very similar.

Agreed - I think the point about different players playing different winds at different times is well taken; but having a "course wind" that varries would make the playing field a little more fair.  As I noted a few weeks ago, I once played Kia where I got 15 holes of headwind (including all the par 5's) and had no chance to reach any greens in two.

This happened to me recently on St. Andrews.  First 6 holes headwind, last 3 tail winds.   Was during a ready go so all winds were near 30 MPH in my face for the better part of the game.

Are the winds in RGs random or does everybody play the same set?

    YankeeJim:

Random - everyone gets different wind. WGT answered this, but I also played a RG while chatting with a friend playing the same one. Drastically different.

I mean thats not really fair.

WGT, is it that difficult to have 1 set of wind patterns per tournament, or perhaps just make it easy and do it per day?  Like someone else wrote, the first 6 holes of a tournament I played the wind was 25 to 30 into my face the first 7 holes.  Well that takes eagle out of play on the par 5, and driving the green on 2 other holes impossible.  So if someone else had a downwind, the advantage is theirs.  Now I know nobody plays the same wind in real life, but they play pretty close depending on the time of day they played.  Generally you are not going to have the same course having 2 different winds, one a tailwind, the other a headwind on the same hole.

I remember the discussion cyl referred to now, neil. I think the consensus was that if anyone knew going in what the conditions were it would give them an unfair advantage. I guess it's the luck of the draw.

what we really need is blustery winds instead of the false constant wind tunnel types winds we do get. wouldn't it be more like real golf if the wind indicator flickered between two numbers for example instead of a 15mph wind it varied from 10 -18 mph. it would add the unknown factor too your shots and  make it harder to pepper the pin on every approach shot. some people on this site play by the numbers and can judge to within feet where the ball will land, by making the wind varied and unpredictable those 4 or 5 ft putts could change into 15 or 20ft not so easy then. lets make this game a true reflection of the real thing and have unforgiving blustery winds. just a suggestion.

YankeeJim, I guess you are referring to the idea of a days wind pattern, then yes people would know from a practice round, or ranked round before the tourneys.  So instead, make a tournament wind for any tournaments.  To be honest, since I started fishing last year, I notice wind patterns much more now, and I seriously would be shocked if any pro walks out of the clubhouse without a weather report, and I would bet money that most players know the general wind direction or strength on any given day before the hit their first practice ball.

I also like the idea of a wind range as previously mentioned.  It would do 2 things, 1) not allow us to zero in on spots 2) be a clever excuse for the VEM
