I notice that a higher percentage of mis-hits are closer to intended target line than dings. Any explanation as to why? I think I have played enough rounds and quit countless more due to this experience. It is a huge understatement to say it is annoying.

I have an interesting theory about that, longball. If you want to picture Mel Gibson when I lay this out that's ok-LOL. First, let me ask you something. If the mishit was closer to the intended target than a ding is it possible your aim was off by the amount of the mishit?

As for the theory, there's been huge discussion about a virtual machine variable that is supposed to adjust stuff so you don't get too good. (This is a seriously understated and oversimplified way  to say it.) Search "VEM" for the sordid details but my theory says if there is this virtual adjustment then missing the ding would make you look like you aren't accurate enough to adjust yet. LOL-How's that for left-handed logic? If you ding too much the adjustment will come and if you don't ding enough you get left alone.

Whether or not there is an adjustment at any time, I mishit as many shots as I ding, many times on purpose and I don't see drastic results. If you golf in real life you know you can make what you thought was a perfect shot only to see an unexpected result. The same thing happens here and if you believe this game emulates golf better than any sim I've seen then you can accept what is happening-it's real golf life.

If you expect to win by playing by the exact numbers I could see where you would be annoyed. I annoy the heck out of myself because I can't shoot the same scores every time out. Then again, I can't remember the last time I shot the same score on successive rounds IRL.

Thanks, JIm. True, real golf is about how well you miss the ball, not how good your good ones are. Unfortunately, I do not think VEM has anything to do with my experience, unless it is randomly generated. I have dinged four shots in a row (only happened once) and each shot was true to initial aiming point. The bad ding happened after a run of about 5 or 6 mis-hits which still stayed near target. This particular ding was in the realm of 20 yards offline. To me, that is a bit extreme. I have yet to have a mis-hit (I have had some real bad ones at that) miss original target by half that much. It was also early in the round, so I doubt my performance had any bearing...I was one under after 3 on SA.
