Faterson:I wish I knew what that means! Must be one of those American games whose rules are utterly incomprehensible to us Europeans.
That would be like Slovakia going into the last minute of a soccer game winning 2-0 and giving up 3 goals to lose! That would be exciting to me but it pales in comparison to the 0-0 game. Whaddya mean nobody won? They played for 2 hours and nobody won??!!
Baseball is the only sport that does not have a clock. There is always a winner and a loser. You have to get 27 outs (24 if you're home team) to win. If you can't hold onto a lead for those outs you lose. When you get a big lead it's worse when you can't hold it because it brings great joy to anti-rooters. It's like gagging on that 3 foot putt to win and 3 putting to lose a match.
I had the distinct pleasure of playing in a true World Series against teams from Sweden, Denmark, Holland and believe it or not-Russia. Every year in November in Arizona teams from all over the world meet and compete in a baseball event. 6 games in 4 days to get to the playoffs. The Russians were a trip to hang with. They couldn't understand us and we couldn't understand them but put a bat and a ball in their hands and they were instantly at ease and comfortable playing a universal game, albeit not very good.
Baseball as an Olympic sport would never work. Too much money is being spent on the best players and the allure of the gold medal is not enough to risk injury, damaging the goods this money is spent on. Witness Boston's woes with their Japanese pitcher that pitched for his country in the last World Baseball Classic. He's slated to pitch in a AAA game here on his way back from rehabbing the sore arm he got playing for his country's glory. Boston spent $51,000,000 in this guy!!!
Golf works for everybody. From the accomplished veteran to those that have never even had a club in their hands. Baseball does too, just like soccer. All you need is some open space, a few rudimentary tools and a competitive spirit. The human nature is what really makes them all a World experience.
