I believe I'm best at my short game when playing and feel pretty confident right around the hole. But the hardest shot for me to adjust to is playing from the fringe or 1st or 2nd cut from just off the green. Apparently when I let WGT select the club, usually a PW or SW, I play the ball with the intent to backspin (green dot near the bottom) and the ball ends up going a handful of yards at best, not close enough or onto the green. I wonder if it defaults to being a flop shot, wherein the ball would have little roll, assuming a normal green.  I was just playing a match and the opponent kindly suggested I use a putter instead of wedge from the fringe if the ground was level.   Any suggestions on this?

Putting from fringe is often a good call - you need to add between 1 and 3 feet to the displayed distance, depending on how much fringe there is between ball and the green proper. If ball is on fringe putter scale defaults to a high number (100 ft for me), so adjust scale as appropriate.

Default for rough lies  is CHIP, but remember that the chip shot is 25% carry and 75% roll from a clean lie; carry is even less from rough. I personally use the default spin when chipping from rough to ensure carry gets me onto the green and rolling. If you're further into the rough or in deeper rough than 30-40, forget the chip and go to a pitch or flop shot.
