Now and again (ok quite often) I hit a bad approach shot and although make it onto green it's miles from the hole.

I play with people who are very good at punching on the green rather than putting at long range. When I ask what formula they use they say "double the yardage and add 10". I have tried this and always end up miles passed the hole.

I use Z Satin wedges and they use Clevelands so I reckon there's a different formula. Had a wee practice today and adding 15-20 seems to be more like it although I wasn't getting as close to the hole as I would like.

Any help much appreciated . .

p.s. I know to use b/spin when punching on the green . .

p.s.s. I did the search thing to see if there any tips but couldn't see any . .

I also havnt really figured that shot out Lobsterboy. I havnt really played with it much either though.

Only the first of Dannys links have any calculations and it looks like its the 2x foot +10 calc. I'm not sure if there are any others, but am interested in any other answer. :)

If the ball is in 50% rough, I usually punch it like 25% harder than the yardage & I don't alway use backspin. I depends but usually I get good results giving it quite a bit more Gas with a punch, but of course try & treat it like a chip most times.

So far this gives me ok results but I'm still working on it. Thanks

Edit: I use the Cleveland wedges with high trajectory so,,,I'm sure its way different with the Satin wedge for example.

I believe you're supposed to use a full swing but you have to be on the green. Not on the fringe. The formula I've been taught is: Yardage x 2.25. Example: 15 yards x 2.25 = 33.75. I would use my 60 yard wedge to make this shot. Hope this helps Lobersterboy...

PS - Punch shots work good from the fairway or rough but they haven't worked for me on the green.
