I played first 3 rounds, got a routine and some rythm.  Then it was all bets off in 4th, starting with tees as deep as possible (Legend?).  #1 was forever and a half, impossible to hit in two.  The wind was dead into every tee shot.  The greens were at least 30% faster (even though Tournament speed for all rounds).  There was NO consistency between previous rounds and this 4th.  I believe it was a lot harder than the US Open qualifier, I could at least stay under par there.

I wondered if this 4th round was the same for all?  If so, I don't know how anyone could have scored well considering completely unpredictable conditions.  Makes me want to quit this game.

my first round was good, clubs reacted normally, but my 2nd and 3rd rounds was like my clubs had changed from 4.5 precision to 1 and all calibrated wrong.  I would get shots where i aim 20 yards left to avoid tree yet my DINGED shot would leave club 20 yards right and go straight for the tree i had aimed to avoid, also when i did have 5 foot birdie putts on these 2 rounds, i would aim an inch right, but ball starts off from PIN not my aim marker. These 2 rounds were off pro and master tee's, a chance to score well, but the deviation i was getting was unreal (comical really) and i had absolutely no chance of posting a good score. My 4th round went back to normal, clubs acting right again, and if it wasn't for meter skipping on 3 holes on front (all birdie-able holes) i would have done o.k because i birdied all the back.  It made me think that there must be a pool of players who are pre-determined (might be randomly, or WGT favourites) who dont get as much deviation as the rest of us, and its out of these players the winner wil crop up.

Chop, the conditions were same for all.  The greens were Championship speed for last round. A 10ft putt hit on standard green would travel 14ft with same power on champ greens.

Similar to you, on hole 1 I had 16mph  in my face. Driver full power in fairway, plus 3wood full power and needed a 3yrd shot to reach the green for as well on that par 4 for me with top equipment.  17 at STA can be the same way if you get a headwind.

Way back tees, high winds and champ greens are challenging for sure.  You've got good game,  embrace the tougher conditions and the birdies will be more rewarding when they come along.

Have I been to a different tournament?

Yes, I was in the Master tier.

We had progressively difficult settings, starting with regular tourney green & wind, in the third round legend greens w/ low wind.

For the last round, I expected back tees, legend greens + more wind, but it was only medium wind IMO and the usual tees & very fast greens. These easy conditions allowed for my personal record, matching Webb Simpson's 68.

It's still a helluva difficult course, I have a lot to learn to master it.

The guy who called it an easy course after breaking par in single hole play from front tees w/o problems was wrong - yours truely has reconsidered :)
