Ok.  I have played this hole quite a bit.  I have high trajectory irons.  If the pin position is in lower right on the green, it seems that the only way to safely par the hole is to put the second shot in the bunker in the front.

If you go at the pin or near it there is a huge likelihood that the ball will run out and leave a sure 3 putt.

If someone has a track record for making birdies on this hole in this pin position I am all ears.

This is the most difficult hole for me, with BPB #15 coming in a close second.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Both holes your talking about become birdie opportunities with the r11 irons.Especially #15 bpb.

I have two saved replays of the only way I've ever birdied that hole in that position. Check them out. I land my aproach short left of the bunker and play a flop shot to the hole for minimal runout. Dropped one in today for birdie. I usually end up close enough for par by putting up hill to the pin 2-6 feet.

This hole drives me nuts -- at least BPB 15 is fun; you can hit the green and leave the ball below the hole if the wind is against you (and not too strong) but I never, ever get that.... I've heard a lot of people say they play the bunker; I play either just short of the green and left of the bunker, leaving a flop or pitch -- or short of the bunker within full 64 degree wedge distance.

The best way to attack that pin is to lay up about 45-50 yards short and use the lob wedge to get close for par.  Trying to attack that flag even with R11 irons brings bogey or worse into play.

First of all, that pin placement is a play for par, unless your Phil. I did land it to three feet once for birdie with a R11 3 iron and the right wind. I've also holed it out a few times from the bunker.

Don't go for the green on the approach. Land it in the bunker and pitch it out. Aim left.

When the pin is middle left, aim left and chase it onto the green. It may take a few shots to learn the distance, but it can roll to three feet.

BP15. It depends on the wind for your approach. You either club-up once, or you club-up twice. Gauge for the wind accordingly. Apply at least 1/2 backspin, or more. Its all about the wind.

    GL Bizz, and hittem' straight.

The only way you will birdie Oakmont #9 is if you have wind ranging from 3 o'clock to 9 o'clock (clockwise) and you are using the 4 dot spin Nike's.  I landed slightly above pin but with the level 71 Nikes ball will bounce backwards and land bellow pin, but my friend who was playing against me had level 48 Nike's and he landed in exact same place as me, but ball bounced forward.  He bogeyed while i birdied

I can't remember ever holding the approach close to the pin with Burners except when I had a stiff head wind. I'm sure it can be done if hit perfectly.

You can hold put it close with a low tail wind and R11s. And you can hold it everytime with a head wind and R11s. Assuming you hit the shots correctly. Which, of course, I hardly ever do.

I have an eagle in my replays from like 205 with a 13mph wind from 10 or 11oclock with a 3 iron. The R11s make all the difference in the world on that hole.
