    hi

the best way to determine is practice practice practice.

also, early breaks break more, downhill breaks break more.

early breaks affect the destination the most, late breaks affect the angle of the rolling the most. Sometimes you may see a huge break in the early part of the putt, but it has less effect comparing to late-huge-breaks. and yes, practice makes it work better

You is have to go to a page that are called the Youtube and be looking for vids by top players (the bollox boy is a good one). Be looking at a putt and freeze stop and working out where you play it for the pot. Next thing is start the vid and see if you was right. You is then learn quick

When you are putting, are you putting from the reverse angle?  I find that you get a better read and can track the actual break better from this angle.  After you hit the putt you can see where you need to make corrections for next time.  This angle gives you a better look at what the ball is doing as it approaches the hole.

Gotta develop feel for the breaks, which comes from experience, which comes from practice. Be nice if there were some tricks or shortcuts to learning to read the breaks correctly, but practice seems to be the only way. Also like anything in life some people are just gonna have knack for it and others not so much.

One method given here is pure and extensive maths (a constellation which some put close to madness):

G0LD's putting formula - you'll find it in the forums.

with putting, unlike approach shots, it is all about feel for me .. & practice, as other posters have mentioned ..

    my method is this:

     - i try read 1st half of put & judge where the ball should be 50% on its way to the hole

     - then i try judge whether the remaining 50% of the put will take the ball to the hole or not

    - if not, i adjust the start-off line & repeat the process

after some time this process becomes reasonably quick ..

i also always use the larger scales for putting & not the scale the dumb-a$$ caddy hands me .. i.e. for 5ft put i use 50ft scale .. easy to ding compared to the 10ft scale ..
