fairway bunkers

  Hi, all. I've been on wgt a while now but this is my first post.

  How is it when I land in a fairway bunker and use a sand wedge to get out, the ball only travels about 30 - 40 yards, but getting out of one by a green the ball goes the required yardage? It's got me baffled.

  it depends on the sand. 15/20 sand will play very well out of bunkers, while 30/40 and higher will play how you said.

  all sand is different and varies per hole/course. also difference is what happens where it lands; on a slope or not.
