Watch the video "the Making of Royal St. George's."  It will explain a lot about why we get limited views.  It has to do with the photorealism approach WGT uses to make things look better than any other computer game you've played.

I think its simply the way the game has been written; each course has certain camera locations and i assume when it comes to the view for each shot, it utilises the nearest camera. And yeah, it is a bit poxy, I have no idea why it just cant be from your "point of view" all the time when playing a shot; you can get into some areas/positions where the view, if there is no camera near where you are, will be almost side on, or even reversed!

When you are putting, there is (usually) an arrow near the bottom right which you can use to reverse your view so you can see your putt from the hole, and i think some players prefer to putt from that view ... not me tho.

It's the way the pictures have been taken: By photograph.

Now it's clearly impossible to have a foto of every possible angle, that's why quite a few views are from the side. Alas, when it comes to putting, there is a good reverse angle for 99% of the situations, good enough to judge the break and sometimes good to putt from this picture. BTW: Short cut for reverse (or zoom on the FW) is the space tab.

There are some weird views on elevated greens, STA## 8+11 (the Par 3s) come into mind. There they used the regular setup: camera at guy's eyes, and missed the opportunity to elevate the camera to get a view of the green surface. Therefore, we only see the heels and a§§ of the avatar.

There are also places where a picture could not be taken, i.e. KIA#17. When you're pin high on the right, there is no view from behind because they didn't go into the lake. Same for other wet locations, e.g. on CCC.

Edit: There is a "Making of..." video on youtube. Nice story!

I don't ever putt from the reverse view, but i DO use it to set up the line I want to take. With a given cross-slope for a putt, the slower the ball is rolling the more it will break. So, it makes sense that the region of most importance is going to be near the hole as your putt is slowing down.

Once I've set up my aiming point and determined how hard I want to hit the putt, I switch back to the 'player's view' so that the reactions I've ingrained (don't be early on left-breaking putts, don't be late on right-breaking putts) are more intuitive (to me at least). Last step before putt, insure I have correct putter scale in place and the point on the meter  that will yield the desired distance. Now, smoothly apply desired power, start the start the stroke immediately, and ding it or just miss the ding on the preferred side (ie, 'into the break').
