im unable to give you an exact measurement method, and i have no formula to prove it works, but my putting has improved out of sight using this method, i guess i just do it by feel.

for example if the green is sloping left-to-right, rather than aiming left and letting the ball break right, i deliberately ding on the left hand side. it takes a bit of getting used too but i deffinately think it works.

hope this is useful and that maybe you can try it out..

Trial and error and take notes.

There's no formula. Keep in mind that the more you mishit it, the more distance you will lose.

    Hey Phil,

I've always been a miss ding putter. No real formula to it, pretty much the same as ding putting though there is some loss in distance on the longer putts (15ft or longer).

A lot of people say its less accurate but with the new top putters with all that precision and forgiveness it doesn't really make as much of a difference as it did back in the day. Just make sure you dont click on the wrong side of the ding because it will most likely miss low side if its anything more than a cup width of break. I make some, miss some, but this is the only method I know and I actually seem to miss more putts because of an accidental ding. Its all just a matter of personal preference I suppose :)

Totally disagree with the 'loss of distance'.  I've been a 'miss ding' putter for a long time and I've never experienced a loss of distance, even when I'm missing the ding close to the precision lines - close on 2cm's away from the ding line.  Outside of that may be a problem though, although I wouldn't know.  If I have to miss by more I would move the aimer as well as missing the ding.

Somewhere in the forum archive there are a few guides to putting; different systems to try.  I use the 'missed-ding' method.  Faced with any putt I do the following:

1 - I always use the putterpal.  Swear by it!  This gives me 10% increments so I can precisely guauge the strength of any putt.

2 - For green speed I use the ratios that someone (sorry cant remember who) posted a long while back - I think it was:

Slow greens = divide distance by 0.9

    Standard = distance stated

Fast = distance divided by 1.05/1.1

    V Fast = distance divided by 1.15/1.2

Tourney = distance divided by 1.25/1.3

Championship = distance divided by 1.35/1.4

The reason there are two factors is that green speeds seem to vary slightly according to course.

3 - On elevation I add the uphill distance (in inches) to the distance (in feet), reverse for downhill putts.

4 - For breaks I'll add 1, 2 or 3 feet to distance depending on severity of break.

So say I have a 20ft putt on a tourney green.  downhill by 4inches with a slight break the formula I use is:

    20ft-4 (downhill 4 inches)  = 16 + 1 ft for break = 17ft divided by 1.25 = 13.6ft.

As for the missed ding - that's just guesswork but after a while you get a feel for this.  However as Alosso has stated on another thread, sometimes the missed ding method will be insufficient on heavily breaking putts, so there will be times when you need to move the aiming cursor too.

Most important thing though is practice - lots of it!

This is just my personal opinion on the Ding vs Missed Ding method of putting. The Ding method of putting only requires me to have the ability to aim for 1 target, the ding. The missed ding method requires me to be proficient at hitting multiple targets.  Maybe I am over simplifying this but I find that hitting a single target, the ding, is hard enough, much less the multiple targets of the missed ding method.  And then there is the uncertainty of the degree of miss required.  The level 92 Ghost Spyder putter that I use has slowed the meter to the point where I have little trouble hitting the ding consistently. It is the best putter on WGT, in my opinion.

I realize that there are many out there who use the Missed Ding method successfully and I am not trying to create a controversy.  But this is what I have found works best for me.

Also, putting from the reverse angle and using a calculator is a MUST for me.

I putt to miss on short putts and to ding on longer ones but that's just me.
