It's hard to arrange matchplay games across time zones - so how about a virtual matchplay tournament format where you play a solo round and your opponent, at some later stage, responds to a matchplay challenge, based on the scores for each individual hole.

A simple format would be to declare the result (2up with 1 to play) after an opponent has concluded their challenge.

Slightly more complex, would be to display the state of the virtual match after each hole.

Ideally, virtual matchplay should appear exactly like regular matchplay but against a ghost of your challenger.

Just think - it would be really fast and with no disconnects - what do people think?

I think this is pretty smart.

It sounds like the challenge you can do at the end of a game now. Or am I missing something?

...but, if it works properly, you get a tidy double scorecard to compare the two scores. I always get the matchplay score from it.

OTOH, it must be strokeplay at least for the first to play. If he'll stop playing a certain hole early, how might he know the "answering" score of his opponent?

Plus, there are no gimmes for him, no concedes. For equal chances, the opponent will have to hole out each hole for each chance of a win or a half.

Sounds pretty much like strokeplay challenge with an overlayed match evalulation.

I'd be playing some "ghost" of an opponent ? Where is the challenge in that? Where is the tension of knowing you need to make that 10-footer to halve the hole after your opponent knocks it stiff?  No gamesmanship ... no getting in the other guy's head ..no friendly banter.  Sorry, but it sounds dull as hell to me.

Add in the other WGT fact .... While you both might play with the same conditions ( green speeds and wind range), the odds of both players facing the exact same wind speed & direction for every single shot is almost nil.
