Does anyone have thoughts on ways to recalibrate the scoring here?  When I see averages of 55, etc. I cringe.

WGT does such a great job with many other aspects of the game, how about ways to make the game tougher such that realistic averages are achieved by the best players.  I see that the best average on the PGA Tour right now is 68.9.  Why not shoot for something like 65 here?

Average scores here are approaching what I term a perfect game (all birdies and eagles on par 5's - around a 50 on a par 72 - 14 birds/4 eagles) for those best players.  The diminishing returns are such that it is becoming nearly impossible for those best to have a miracle round (what I see as 5 - 8 strokes better than your average - like a 59-62 on tour).

Now, I don't think that random mishits should be built into the game.  Many say there are already, but how do those best players hit so low consistently?  What I think really hurts things is the feel meter on the premium balls.  This just doesn't reflect reality in the real world.  Swinging harder/faster in the real world = longer shots/more spin but at the cost of more mishits.

I propose that all the equipment stay the same but that the balls be adjusted such that they cannot slow the meter speed via better feel.  Or at the very least create a subset of tournaments such that only zero feel balls can be used.  I predict that scores would rise to a bit more reasonable level, but that those miracle rounds would still pop up from time to time - more like the real thing - when you are in the groove and dinging everything.

    Anyone have thoughts on this?

This game requires a different set of skills than a real life game does; as such it is natural that people will be able to play a video game at a higher level than real life. This requires a good trigger finger, allows for a lot more games per day than real life and allows unlimited restarts when someone hits a bad shot or hole. Real life golf involves the entire body, is limited by sunlit hours and the course management allowing unlimited restarts.

The scoring "average" here is not the same as real life. This game only averages a person's best scores over the course of a lifetime, ignoring bad rounds. Using those parameters the PGA "average" would be a lot closer to 63 than 69.

First and foremost this is a video game site. Secondly it is a gambling website. Being a real life simulation is behind those two things.

There's one simple answer. It's a video game. It's basically a timing thing.

I understand it is a video game and not real but when the theoretical best score is being approached by many players, what incentive is there to continue?

So I deal some with statistics in real life.  A question I would have is what standard deviation do the best folks see in there scores.  It can't be too large as they are nearing the theoretical low limit of scoring (that I mentioned in the original post).  In real life, you have those fantastic rounds once in a while that really keep you invested in the game.  I wonder (because I'm not near that point) how someone scoring 55 average can have much of a lower fantastic game.

Besides, many folks here complain that many things don't reflect the true experience, so would a subset enjoy that? As I mentioned, maybe a set of tourneys that had limitations to better emulate real life scoring.

I don't mean this post to sound as if I don't like WGT, I do.  Was just thinking of ways that might improve the overall game.  Thanks for the feedback!

So the Top players aren't looking for those occasional 'fantastic' rounds Joe..Just to score as low as possible each game (whether that was 30/40/50) I think that is the incentive ?...after all you wouldn't say no to a big 'pocket pair' everytime you got dealt a hand in the Casino ...Andy

Wow, guess you have a valid point.  I must be an idiot because I never really thought of the site as a gambling site (even though I know that credits change hands) since I never (and won't) actually spend real money here.

Kind of depressing and makes me want to quit.  I'm one of those folks who don't need to have money on something to make it interesting for me.  Feel sorry a bit for those who do...

If this was similar to real life.  We would be getting better distances with all of our clubs.  The tour players, can hit their 3 irons a lot farther than 225 yards.  They hit their 3 woods around the 300 yard range and so forth.  Of course this depends on the different players, and how strong they are.

I think the scoring and the way scores are posted are accurate.  You have to remember that if you played any golf game on any game console or PC, the scoring is also in the 50's for 18 holes.

It's not a game of golf, it's a golf game.
