     Hello everyone,

I am new to the game [as of the time of this post LVL18 with AS of 88] but i´d like to be able to know what you, the more experienced guys, take into account when taking a shot.

For example, a shot 106yds long, 15 wind headways, with an elevation of 8 higher that where you are hitting. How do you take all that into account amd calculate the distance? I saw the tips for wind (though I´d love to know about 3 ou 9 o´clock winds, how much do you add horizontaly?) but not for elevation. Add 1 yard per foot?

Eager for advices and hoping to see you in the fields soon,

     Diego

Most people use a yard per yard for elevation.  There is a wind thread that addresses wind effects at varying angles.  To learn to adjust for lie, spin, etc., the best move is to go into practice mode and make a lot of shots under different conditions.  You can take up to 10 shots on each hole.  Chip into some rough, whang your way out, and see how you do.

Keep reading and use the search feature to help you find what you are looking for faster.  You will learn best through reading, experience, reading, experience, a tip from a better player, reading, experience.................lather, rinse, repeat.

    Hi Diego,

Here's some advice you may find useful..this is tailored to my specific clubs (L83 G20's)

every 3ft of elevation uphill I add a yd for driver down to 7i, 8i-PW I use only 65% of the uphill elevation and add those yards and with my wedges, I use 20% of the elevation and add those yards..This is an estimate as some holes play longer and shorter..

Downhill, every 4ft down = 1 yard subtracted (again, some holes play longer/shorter and only practice will make perfect)

    for wind, I have 3 wind speed calculators 0-10mph, 11-20mph and 21+mph

In your example, I would do the following,

106yd (8ft would fall into my pw 9i range) so I take 65% of that =5.20 ft, so I would add a yard and a half, or round it up to 2, if the wind is head-on at 15mph, I would go 15mph x.4 =6yds (Using a clockface, 12 and 6 are perfect head or tailwinds, I quarter a 10 or 11 o clock wind and again quarter it for a 2 or 10 o clock wind..

So, 106 + 2 + 6 =114..so I would either add a few dots of topspin with my PW (rated 110) and it would be fairly close or I would choke back on a 9i (rated 120 full bs)

The best thing you can do is go to BPB back 9, set stroke play mode to practice firstly with low wind, then moderate then heavy and then hit 'em, listen for the thump (Carry distance), do this with all your clubs and try a variety of spin combinations and soon you will have a much better idea of where ur going and what wind effect your specific club and ball combo has..

    Hope this helps,

    Andrew

    Good advice, Andrew,

but the OP is a Hack with Starter equipment. It will take some time for him to take profit of the G20s  *smiles*

    Diego,

those Starter clubs have a low trajectory, therefore level changes need more care than indicated. Frequently, you will have to take one, two clubs more to hit an upslope green, but then the ball will rush through it and only stop in the back rough. The lack of spin, also from the Starter balls, supports this.

You'll have to get a judgement if you can attack the flag, or attack the green through the easiest entry, or have to lay up and place a wedge shot on the green.

Regarding wind, the Starters are less sensible than high quality clubs but it has an effect.

I see you played Par on STA front 9 already, that's pretty good!

Take your time to experience the game. Equipment gets better from level to level. My advice is not to buy any clubs before level 31. Start with two wedges, Ping or higher and take your time...

    Hit it straight mate!

First, I´d like to state my gratefulness to everyone who took the time to reply. Really appreciate it.

I see that practice is the way to go, but I got very eager to start "Birding" and "Hole-in-oneing" and posted here without a more meticulous seach on the forum. Sorry about that.

To Andrew and Alosso, thanks for the tips, I shall try to put them to good use. I should really just sit back, relax, and enjoy the learning ride a little more but there is this eagerness within.. =D

Thank everyone.. see ya [´hopefully] in the greens soon :D

Face reality.  That's good.  But keep the unbridled eagerness.  That's better.

I agree with all of the information you were given.  One thing, don't get over involved with the big score, hole on 1, double eagle, they will come.  My nickle, by the way i'm still a hole in 1, and double eagle virgin!
