    I had 152 yards with a 30mph headwind and a 4 feet up elevation.

I calculated I need about 178 yards to the pin.

I ended up hitting a full lofted 5 iron which goes 180.

The ball ended up going 24 feet long.

Is this just an anomaly or did I calculate something wrong?

I don't trust fbs with head winds like that.  Just for that reason right there.

I personally would have hit the 6i at 165with half top.

I would have calculated it a tad shorter also. The main reason for your balls longer roll though is the hole on that green is severely undulated and has a landing area of less than 7-8 feet then down slopes on all sides causing the ball to roll a lot further. The only way to get close to the pin on that hole is to stop it dead near the hole, which from that distance is tough to do.

I think you're giving that wind too much credit. Instead of giving the shot loft, get it on the ground as soon as you can with a shorter club and top spin like LC pointed out.

Dunno what you're so worried about, OP.  That still isn't a bad shot for that hole in that wind.  Sometimes the ball just jumps, too.

I would say your calculations for the wind were fine but you've hit the 5 iron as 180 club and it actually goes 190. Would agree though that full bs into the wind can be tricky. On the plus side you haven't done this on 18th at Congressional unlike some....

I understand what you mean about the wind and wanting to keep it down.

The reason I chose full loft was because the distance was "what I thought" a perfect distance. I try as much as possible to hit full shots. I gave it about 2 yards more with it being a headwind thinking it would knock it back a little more.

I recalculated my 5 iron full spin and it is coming up about 182-183

This fits with that result you gave if you hit it full. Knowing that and giving the wind a little less credit (it is a good stopping wind) if you had choked that iron down a bit you'd have been right where you needed to be.

One of the reasons I like to use top spin with a lower club in a situation like that is because with the lower club you can hit it full and pretty much maximize the result on missed hits and still have a putt. Your preference for full shots vs choking is smart.

For what its worth, my shot records on that hole:

152yds up 4' 30mph at 6 o'clock (same as OPs) I hit Burner 2.0 6I, 1/3 BS and ended 12ft short and left.  6I full no backspin would have been close.

I agree with those above who said you gave the headwind too much credit and hit it too hard. At that distance my calculations give 12.5 yds extra for the wind.
