Longtime listener, first time caller...
This review is directed specifically towards folks who aren't within a rocketship ride of the L90 R11 irons.
I'm currently at Master Tier, Level 81. I play the L59 G20 Irons & a newly acquired L81 G20 Driver that is eminently dingable and quite a bit longer than the L58.
I most often play the WGT Tour-S due to cost-effectiveness, though the Srixon L11 is what I'd prefer to play. A story for another day.
I love the L59 G20s. Meter speed even with WGT balls allows me to hit the ding fairly consistently. The L59 G20s are rock solid clubs. Highly recommended to the newer members looking ahead.
My goal was to work my way to L83 & purchase the complete G20 Club Set (Yeah, lots & lots & lots of surveys to accumulate credits). I got tired of not being able to reach greens in regulation. The positive was that my short game sharpened considerably (that should make the dedicated members here smile – your efforts are not in vain). The negative was that working so damn hard to just to beat par got old.
I'd read countless reviews/reports on the L79 Burner Irons. Over & over I read that while great irons, the meter was VERY fast, way too fast to match them with WGT balls. Hence my plan to go with the G20s when I reached L83 was affirmed.
I soon realized it would take many months of play to attain L83 (as stated above, a story for another day).
Then came the release of the L79 RocketBladez. It was mentioned that the meter was a bit short of lightening fast (many thanks to chris5214, amongst others), so I decided to rent the set, and proceeded to play the heck out of them.
Well, what a revelation this set has turned out to be!
I figured playing my most feared course – Olympic – would be a fine test. Short of it is, I played the course a few times and played well. The L81 G20 Driver combined with the L79 RocketBladez brought back the joy I used to have for this game.
I played every course to test differing wind conditions, green receptivity and so forth. Back spin, no spin, top spin and every spin in between...all tested again and again.
I found that for me – using the Srixon ball (2 dots of feel) - it was as easy to 'ding' the L79 RocketBladez as with the L59 G20s. Yeah, I was shocked and amazed and jazzed as if I'd just been handed a year-end bonus check. Ok, more than a modicum of hyperbole there. But ya'll get my meaning.
The WGT Tour-S ball (0 dots of feel) presented a bit of a challenge. We're talking FAST meter. Much faster than the G20 set. Buyer beware: if you can't afford to play a ball offering a dot or two of feel, the G20s may be the club set of choice for you. Then again, maybe not...
Short-winded though this first post may be...I would be remiss if I failed to thank those of you who tirelessly offer guidance in the forums). There are always a large percentage of lurkers on any forum – as I have been until now. Remember that people are reading, learning, and sometimes run off by those of you who either don't know not to post when liquored up, are just plain ornery without the assistance of liquid foolishness, or plain have it tough and sometimes need to vent.
Thank you ladies and gentlemen members. Thank you WGT.
