Level 20 Amateur (with 281 credits).

Currently equipped with  a full "Tour Starter" set of clubs and WGT GI3-D balls.

Looking at improving my game (though I just shot my first sub-par 9 hole in a tourney).

Should I just stick with what I have and save credits for clubs and replacement balls later or should I try something now with upgrading my golf balls?  If I upgrade them - what should I get Callaway Tour i(z) or Srixon Z-Star?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

At your level and with those clubs distance isn't a consideration, because you will always be hitting fairly long approaches.

What you want is a ball you can ding consistently.

That ball is the WGT G12-S.  64 credits per sleeve.

It won't hurt when you lose one.

I used the WGT G-13 S until I reached Legend.  At that point, I simply had to change to the Callaway Legend ball that I now use.  The WGT  G-12 S or the G13-D that you are using now should keep you competitive without breaking the bank for a while.

Try the GI-SD ball. The one you use adds distance but does nothing for the spin. This one gives you 2 dots of each with the same meter speed and should help with the stopping. Save your future addiction to premium balls when you get clubs that can take advantage of them.  :-)

Stick with starter balls and save your credits for clubs. You learn the courses, greens, and getting up and down from 100yds in much better when you can't apply any backspin. At lower levels, gaining credits (for free) is the hard bit. At higher levels, gaining XP is the hard bit, and you'll be able to earn all the credits you want in between levels.

The Callaway i(z) is a very nice ball for the higher level clubs, and comes in the slow meter version for when you reach the higher level R11s. All the irons go pretty much the stated distance with full backspin applied, so you don't even have to learn any yardages.

I would tend to agree with Tonto. The G12-S costs 30 cr less than the G13-D balls, and they last longer. The meter is only a half ball faster, and the extra distance is swapped for better spin, but with any new ball, there's still a getting used to period.

Whatever you decide, stick with it until you reach the higher levels and can afford to switch to the high-end balls. You get accustomed to playing with certain properties, and what you would consider an upgrade only becomes a necessity to change the way you play the game.

    Have fun regardless - Kelsey

Thanks for all the advice. I guess when my G13-D balls are all gone I will try out the 12-S ones.
