I have finally come to the conclusion that there is no point in practicing, i will set up a course with same conditions as say a cc tourney, hit a few balls to get my eye n feel in, then wen i go into the tourney(same conditions) it bears no resemblance to the practice course that i just played....meter starts stuttering like crazy, but is oh so smooth on a 2ft par putt, winds go here there n everywhere, cant read a putt & when i do its almost guaranteed to lip out or hang on the edge.I played St.andys 1st 4 times, had 4 birdie putts between 15 & 5 feet, made none, went back on computer 5 hours later, played same hole 4 times & made 3 birdies??? I think when its your time for a good round, it will come regardless of whether u ding every shot

    There can be benefits.

Hopefully one day WGT will add the ability to take MULLIGANS in practice mode which would be of great help to players to learn all the subtle nuances of the short game.

Plus mulllies would eat up ball life and lead to more ball sales!  More money for them.  Cha-ching!

I find your words to be true to my experience, Quaker...with one exception: I play practice rounds when there are specific shots I want to experiment with on different courses. I find practice rounds invaluable for this purpose.

Absolutely no point in practicing if you want to get the same shots in in ranked games. Sort of depends on your fear of what you may do to your average by taking 10 shots per hole.

Practice is about learning your clubs and what they can do, not necessarily a single shot. Your best practice is the weekly unlimited tournaments. You get game conditions for your tier, you can take 10 shots a hole under the same conditions and you can quit or restart any time you want. The CTTH is the same way. 9 fast shots or a restart on the first tee if you find the right hole to work on something (like Pinehurst #1 for 3-4-and 5 irons.)

Learn the "feel" of your shots as opposed to trying to be exact. Miss the ding on purpose into the wind to see what you can get away with. Stuff like that. Use the free unlimiteds for a good learning experience.

If you are using the free balls, practice away. If not, they are wearing out and you have nothing to show for it. And it is a fact, a ranked round is a whole new game, I truly believe the VEM is turned down in practice mode.

What I would say to any new member (and have) is use the balls you intend to use later on whilst practicing (it can be expensive but pointless otherwise for learning your yrds intimately) then keep practicing and practicing and playing ALT until you can buy a decent set of clubs and can score close to the winning RG scores in your tier..

You can then enter the fray and might just have a chance to recoup some of your investment..

Really a no brainer if we all had our time again imo.
