Hoping maybe someone could explain to me why I see so many high level players that prefer to use the starter irons and wedges. What is the reason or concept? Are they better than the ones we pay for? Is it some sort of bravado thing, to show how good one is? I ask guys during match play but no one gives a clear answer. Hopefully someone is knowledgeable and kind enough to shed some light on this subject for me. Greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure what levels you are referring to when you say "high", but most TMs and legends have upgraded their irons and wedges and balls because of the farther distances and better performance. I have, though, seen a lot of top players continue to use the starter putter because putting is mainly about reading the greens properly, and they are use to the putter speed and increments. The odd exception for the cheaper kit you referred to may simply be a money issue.

There's the odd community tournament with uneven lies and Starter equipment which will cause some players of all tiers to change for practice or competition. Alas, TMs or higher playing a match or other unrelated games with Starters looks more like an error than intention.

Edit: And, while the Starter putter is one of the better of the gratuitous clubs, it's still well inferior to custom putters. I've played some of these tournaments, and the lack of scales and the imprecision on long putts were some major concerns of the players.

Nevertheless, I advise against buying a putter below level 30.

I think he was refering to the beginner putter(not starter putter) witch some legends(myself)even tour legends still use.It is of the market now.Discontinued.

As far as higher tier players playing with starter irons, could be they were practicing and forgot to make the change,or they needed a change. Some players are getting bored.

One thing for sure they have better clubs in their bag.

I too have seen some high level players (lvl 70-90) playing purely with starter equipment. Some just love playing the game, play for fun and have no intention of spending money to buy virtual clubs that you never actually own. Some countries it is also next to impossible to accumulate free credits to upgrade equipment.

I occasionally revert to starters for fun, play like crap but have a good laugh, As for the wedges, they are the nearly the worst clubs ( EZ Swing are diabolical) but I didn't mind the putter - in fact 10 feet and under was good, over that it is very wonky lol.

Regardless of what clubs you use, you can still set your own goals, so I guess perhaps they set their own targets that they try to acheive.

I can confirm that. Level 73, and still playing with starter clubs.

From France, it truly is next to impossible to accumulate free credits, and I can not afford to pay to play (I don't say the game is too expensive, I say it's too expensive for me)... So I do not upgrade my clubs.

But the game is still fun in solo CTTH mode, and sometimes I'm even ranked in the top 10 master CTTH week contest. With my fantastic win rate, I could "buy" an iron set in 2 ou 3 years. ;)
