The statement, "putter heads are flat" is a misnomer. In the real game, most putter heads have between 3 - 5 degrees of loft. Now applying topspin and backspin in the real game is done with the setup, and requires hours of practice. IRL, if you catch the ball at center or below center, the ball will hop and go offline, but will run more. If you hit the ball at the topmost portion, the ball will dig in and go slower, again, going off line. The perfect spot to hit the ball on a putt is just above center, which will keep the ball from hopping or digging in and keep it "on line" as long as your putter head is square at impact. Since there isn't a stance adjustment or ball placement adjustment in this game, the likelihood of being able to apply backspin or topspin just isn't possible. The only adjustment in putting is hitting right or left of perfect, something you'll learn over time.
And for those of you who played the real game and found yourself 3 yards away from the hole on the fairway and thought, "I'll just use my Texas Wedge", don't bother. Hitting a putter from the approach/fairway doesn't fly in this game. Also, if you found yourself with a downhill chip, forget about "with the grain". If you've got anything other than fairway or fringe, don't chip. Live and learn.
Now while the option of using the "Texas Wedge" or "Chip putting" with a hybrid or iron isn't an option in this game, this is, IMO a really fun game. Enjoy it. Learn from your mistakes and have a great time! Most of the members here are pretty cool and will offer good advice!
