So this is basically just me venting a little.  I do not mean to gripe and whinge all over the place...But:

Everyone who is new to the game gets a 3 pack of WGT Starter Balls.  From what I recall, I used 2 of my 3 balls up hackin' up the course and learning the basics before I realized I should save my balls because I was running out.  So, I played many rounds with the unlimited ball.

Then, after getting pretty decent skills, I decided to try to play in the Congressional Championship with the new R11 iron set I just bought with my slaved for (lots of videos & activities) credits.  So I needed balls that made my meter slow down a bit and so I went back to my WGT Starter ball (1 dot feel, 1 dot durability and 0 everything else) .  I also began investigating balls and their prices and I saw some good deals for a newbie like me.

Then, as I was playing part of my round, I was about to use up the hits I had on my last WGT Starter ball.  So this seemingly harmless advertisement (or so I thought) popped up above my ball asking me if I wanted to buy another 3 pack of these same balls for 100 credits.  I was interested to know what set of balls could possibly be 100 credits of the same quality (1 dot feel, 1 dot durability and 0 everything else) as the WGT Starters I was currently using.

I had just seen the other balls with better quality specs than the WGT Starters for much less than 100 credits.  So, I decided to click what I thought was a link to go to the Pro Shop to investigate the ball and its specs.

Lo and behold!  After I clicked, It bought them for me on the spot!  After I got a temporary rush of adrenaline (or whatever chemical rushed through me and gave me that heart sinking feeling), I hurriedly rushed to the Pro Shop on my other browser window.  I found these 3 Pack of WGT Starter Balls (Slow Meter)( L1+) and I was very depressed to know that I had just spent 100 hard earned (lots & lots, of videos &  activities)  credits on a fail WGT Starter ball when I could have spent less credits to get a better performing ball...  I sort of felt hoodwinked -.-

I thought to myself "Why do they even offer this fail Starter ball in the Pro Shop when there are other better performing balls for much, much, less!" I further ruminated, "Why do they even have a little link to buy these fail balls in the game console when there is a better deal!"

Think, how many newbies are out there losing credits to this ball of mediocrity like me because WGT suggests a small little quick click buy when they could get a better deal.

Why even offer that ball anymore?  It says "(Slow Meter)" but the other balls have more feel, so I am guessing they are "Slower Meter," although it doesn't say so.  Why even offer that ball anymore!?  It seems pointless...except to help someone accidentally waste their hard earned (lots & lots & lots! of videos & activities) credits.

    Thanks,

    JMan

There are certainly more traps to put your foot in here, mate.

Now, this valuable lesson cost you only one dollar (1 $). That's not too bad :)

They aren't wasted - you may use these balls in a watery CTTH or Blitz.

And if you whine about the time wasted with videos and such, you may want to think about alternatives.

    Most of all: Have fun!

I sort of agree with JMan,

My gripe is that, when I purchase the balls, how come after certain number of games, a new ball is taken out of the sleeve? No information of whether the ball(s) are in bad shape or such. And why is that when I quit the game the ball also gone ?

This will happen when you equip your last ball of a certain type. If you run out of balls during a round you're going to get stuck with the free ball regardless of what else you have in your bag. This is WGT's way of reminding you.

Mushy sent you balls with a slower meter and a little distance. I sent you some with an even slower meter and a little spin. Both of them are miles better that that 100 credit ball and cheaper, too. Now you can go park those starter balls in the nearest water hazard and not feel bad about the 100 credits.  :-)

There's a small graph in the lower right corner of the game screen that shrinks as you use the ball. It turns red when you're getting closer to the end of the life of the ball. The Durability stat tells you which balls last longer. The more dots, the longer it lasts.

LOL. Ya, I listen to a game once in a while-roughly 162 a year. Kinda hard these days watching the B team, though.

    Keepin' the faith.  ;-)

    Hi again,

I now see that there may actually be a good reason for having the WGT Starter Balls (Slow Meter) (L1+).  Currently, I mainly use the free unlimited ball (a.k.a. 'the rock') and so I know my clubs with that ball and have much of wedge shots charted with the free unlimited ball.

    It seems pointless...

Why offer a ball that might be considered grossly overpriced or a "fail Starter ball...of mediocrity"?  Perhaps WGT's product developers understood and understand the possible high value of a ball with 0.0 attributes on everything except the feel and durability rating.  And so, that may be why it has been, and is, offered.  It may not actually be pointless even though it may "seem" so.

A wide array of choices can sometimes be a good thing because "better performing" is in the eye of the user—what is "better" for one person's interests may not be "better" for another person's interests or even the same person's interest at different times.

So, what is the possible high value?  From what I've read, the spin rating as well as the distance rating can affect ball flight and so if I did begin to use another ball with "better" attributes, such as spin or distance, I might have to re-chart just about all of the shots I've already learned with the free unlimited ball to get equal competence with a "better" ball.  Doing so would probably take lots and lots of mulligans and so, unless I was willing to stick with a premium ball brand for the long haul, buying them would probably not be the most frugal way to spend my credits.

And so, I've been thinking that I'd actually like a ball such as the 100-credit WGT Starter Balls (Slow Meter) (L1+) but that actually has maybe a 3.0 to 5.0 feel rating without any other spin and distance attributes, just like that "ball of mediocrity."

In fact, now I'd probably be willing to pay 250-300 credits for a 3-pack of balls with such "bad" attributes as 0.0 rating on spin and distance for special occasions.  Why? Because I already know my shots with the free unlimited ball and I'd like a slower meter without any extra spin or distance attributes, attributes that might affect ball flight.  I'd say that the perceived value of an item depends very much on the user's interest(s).

The MAX Slow Meter Balls (Hack+) that I bought a couple months ago for special occasions make a very nice slow meter—even for the MAX Precision Iron Set (L45+) I use—and have 0.0 spin but have a distance rating of 2.0.   While using those Max Balls with the extra 2.0 distance, I can do a pretty decent calculation and reduce my power on shots to get a close rendition of the free unlimited ball.  But, I'd rather a ball with a MAX Slow meter (5.0 Feel or more! if more then maybe 5.0 isn't Max!) and 0.0 rating on the spin and distance attributes because then I could just play it as the free unlimited ball but with the luxury of a vastly slower meter.

Maybe WGT has thought of introducing a "Slower Meter" ball with 3.0 to 5.0 feel rating but wouldn't want to give the people more choice if doing so would incite hysterical and misguided complaints.  Rewarding such behavior can encourage more of it.  I do not believe the people at WGT are imbeciles despite much of the hassle and hostility directed at them.

Although my first post was not hysterical and without careful thought, I remember having an internal debate on whether to publish my initial feelings after accidentally purchasing something I did not intend to purchase because I didn't want to carelessly publish something that I'd later regret.  I sort of do regret it now.  And actually, I thought I had decided not to post it.  I remember the next day after I posted was a Saturday and I got an e-mail saying I had received gifts.  As I recall, I was surprised to learn it was related to this post because I thought I had closed out the window to before publishing that post.

Since that first post, I've read stories of people receiving refunds after contacting (hopefully politely) WGT Member services.  Being the newbie I was at the time, I don't think I was aware of the possibility of doing so.

In my view, it is usually best not to speak or publish anything when one is emotionally stirred up and/or fatigued—especially if doing so is or could be easily perceived as a character assassination.

    Thanks again,
    JMan
