So I created a formula that can judge wind coming from any direction. In creating this formula it has changed how I thought wind is understood in this game.

    This is what I thought...

    1. The longer the distance to the hole the "more" the wind will effect the shot?

    2. You can look at ( ) mph wind ^ or v as the same additional or subtraction when calculating distance to hit. basically saying 10 mph at 12 o clock will come up with the same number at 10 mph at 6 o clock?

Basically the deal is my putting is spot on. But unfortunately my approach game is so suspect these days I am not getting a chance to get many putts within 10 ft. mostly 15-20ft. I may get 3 putts per 9 holes from within 10 ft. Which is disappointing cause I have myself making basically anything within 12ft.

Soo... Here is what my formula would show for these situations. All 12 o clock wind.

    125 yards - 5mph -  -2.5

    125 yards -10mph -  -5

    125 yards - 20mph - -10

    225 yards - 5mph -   -4.5

    225 yards - 10mph -  -9

    225 yards - 20mpg -  -18

How well do those numbers stack up against yours?

Also does forward wind effect the ball more because of roll outs? Should I have a different calculation for forward wind and back wind?

I know there are so many wind threads. I have read a majority of them. Any help or advise would be great. Otherwise Ill keep practicing and trying to continue to make long putts. lol

Your numbers for 10mph are pretty close to what I use. Offset (or what I call wind drift) is not linear with wind speed.

Approach shots are very sensitive to equipment (club and ball), spin applied, and slope of the green at landing point and through the roll-out.  That roll-out is impacted by wind direction. For a direct head-wind shot you may add x yards to indicated distance, but may need to subtract a different  value (say, y yards) for for the same shot & distance and wind speed, but with this time a tail wind.

Not only that! The head wind yardage 'penalty' will vary with target elevation ... as will the tail-wind 'bonus yards'.

This game is easy for the truly talented, but it has a lot of variability built in.

Weida, if you will go to my homepage you will see a formula that sgtbilko came up with for figuring wind. This is 12:00 o'clock winds. To go higher in wind speed just continue the formula.
