I dont know if it is because i am a structural engineer with an eye for detail or just that i am anal retentive but the greens and short game in WGT are all messed up. example : there is a trigonometry equasion ( i will spare you the math) to calculate distance by the hight of the sun above the horizon (azimuth) and the exact length of a shadow, point being if i have a put that is 30 yds from my initial lie on the green and an average stick height is 6 -8 ft  then there is NO WAY that the sticks shadow is over half the length of that 30 yds unless it is almost dusk or we r playing some where in the arctic circle. Also the slopes to the greens are increadibly unrealistic, number one a 3 ft or better slope on 30 ft is the equivalant to alot of house roofs , so there for that green would look about like the side of a mountain slope , now the run of any given slope can be easily found by taking measurements to scale and from a foot or so up just dropping a ball onto it  I find it very difficult to adjust from what i know is reality (i grew up in pennsylvania and have played a couple of these courses) and to the measurements and distances WGT represents. ask any achetecht or engineer they will confirm what i have just said :)

Its a game with hidden deviances that bear little or no resemblance to real life...i can add/subtract...but somedays maths go out the window on here....Play fast n c**p..hit low...work every shot out,hit sh*t....every round is different, maybe thats why we play?

Does the op assume that every photograph taken on each course was taken at exactly the same time?

    i find ..

that if a few tokes of indica are added to that equazion ...

i almost feel as if i'm actually the avatar, an the view from ANY TEE on WGT..is.....well,,,, just beautiful ...

    peace ....:)_~~

I are a retired engineer and will confirm you also is an engineer as you can't spel worth a crap either!  It is a well known fact. We can't.

I will also confirm if you see a 45ft shadow of a 7ft flagstick it is either time to head for the clubhouse cuz it very very late in the day or you teed off before the sun came up and I hope you brought the Red Bull.

But shame on you for calling it (the elevation) the azimuth.  We all know azimuth is the angular distance in the sky measured relative to North towards the East at the horizon.

Now where on WGT did you see this 45ft shadow on a flagstick?  I would like a screenshot if you don't mind.  I've been here 4 years and to be honest can't recall ever seeing one.

    Which brings me to today's....

    MATH QUIZ:

Given the flagstick is 7ft tall and the grid lines are 2 feet apart.  What is the elevation of the sun in this photo.  In degrees.  + or - 2 is acceptable.

    Show your work.

In order to correctly calculate this, wouldn't I also need to know the angle of the flagstick?  Am I dealing with a true 90 degree angle here, or is the slope of the green severe enough to cause a tangent deviation?

It's been a while since I've done this, and I'm using a calculator so I won't show all of my work (sorry Professor) ... but assuming a true 90 degree angle of the flag and shadow, my best guess would be 54 degrees.

I used "pi/2" to define my tangent, and assumed a 5' shadow.  Using the calculation "tan-1(1/shadow length), I came up with a rounded 1.37.  Converting 1.37 to degrees I came up with the 54 degrees rounded up.  Since I don't know the time of year, I can't give you the time it would be based on the sun's location to the horizon at Lat: 40.73 ... But Beer:30 sounds about right, since you're on a golf course!

How did I do, professor Andyson?
