when I bring up the grid on the green to determine allowances for wind on a approach shot are the boxes 2ft wide like the putting grid? 3 boxes=6ft=2yds

Not sure, but I think so. However, if you look at the aim box, i.e. the box with the distance in and the yellow pointer on the bottom (dark grey box or dull blue depending on your PC), then the box is 10mph crosswind, or 5mph from the edge to the centre of the yellow triangle, when looked at from the position of the ball i.e. don't zoom in. It is easier to adjust for wind using that in my experience. One extra tip, though, if your PC set up allows you to zoom in on your screen (i.e. not using the game zoom) usually by right clicking and then select zoom, you can zoom in this way and the scale of the box to the view is the same so you can adjust your 5 / 10mph adjustments more accurately.

Thanks and also for the tip, I totally forgot about the browser zoom...lol.

Been experimenting with all those formulas posted and they don't seem to work very well, and they are totally off with STA winds...

I use the aim box = 10mph on St Andrews and it works very well, I think perhaps you are miscalculating the amount of crosswind for a given wind and direction.

I use this (apologies to the original author but I've forgotten his / her name), the top line is the wind according to the meter and assumes the wind is at 45 degrees, the bottom line is how much of that is a crosswind and so how much you have to offset. Obviously this has to be adjusted for other angles from 0 - 90 (other angles are just the same maths but different directions).

    Normal 0 false false false EN-GB ZH-CN X-NONE

    Wind strength at 45 degrees:

         10   12   14    17   20   23   24   26   27   30   33   38   41   42

    The cross wind component:

         07   09   10    12   14   16   17   18   19   21   23   27   29   30

Nothing is foolproof but it is usually close, of course you do occasionally get those wtf moments but not too often, (for me at least).

best tip i can give ya is use your blue box i will show u in these pics what i mean..

now this first pic =5 yrds to me half box movement

    Ws9YWstCI6vzRK8Edf7F.htp

now to count boxs for yrds just start from center where its at an say wind is from right to left an u need to move it 10 yrds to right,,, line left side of blue box up where the right side of box is now,, heres a pic of ten yrds...

    k Xbs6QKwMzJgEOmNYOj.htp

so now as u move away from pin u can go by halfs or full movements.....

now one last tip to figure out how far u want to move for cross winds you take the distance of shot an times it by wind but u have to use decimal if the distance is 100 an higher here i will show ya....

say you have shot that 99 yrd an you have 15mph cross wind,

take wind 15 x .99 = 14.85 witch i would round off to 15 yrds u need to move marker witch that would be one full box movement an then another half movement .

now anything 100 an up say its 167 yrds an 20mph wind..

take wind 20 x 1.67= 33.4 yrds so that would be 3 full box movements.

now this is not 200% on the money but its been dam good to me all it takes is lil time an practice an get the feel for it an make your own lil adjustments...

gl to ya an hav fun......

But don't forget that this game has a lot of built in variations and no matter how accurate a system is it won't always come up right.

well I like the box tip...I was using the formula and bringing up the grid box and all that and was still off...used the box and focused more on the game and broke 60 for the 1st time at Kiawah(59 should have been a 57 but I make a couple putting errors on the last 2 hole, shorted 1, forgot to ad the 2 ft. and hit a short straight 1 on the 30 meter instead of 15) so I'm happy...thanks chinajohn and everyone else.
