    YankeeJim:

Personally, I'd like to see either more dots or that topographical representation where you can see the ups and downs in the graph. I asked about this once and it appears a 3D rendering in a 2D atmosphere isn't practical. I think a finer grid would be nice but then there's Flash issues to deal with.

I'm not sure why they would say a "3D rendering in a 2D atmosphere isn't practical," as that type of grid has been used for years and years.  I was playing computer games as early as at least the late 80s that utilized more accurate contour grids than the ones here, and you can't tell me that Flash and other modern programming languages aren't up to the challenge of late 80s computing.  Strange.

Anyway, as I've tried to make clear, it's just an observation.  It hasn't stopped me from playing, nor will it, and I fully expect to get better as I play more and start to learn the various quirks.  In fact, I'm looking forward for 3:00 to come around so most everyone else at my job will leave and I can probably start a round.  But it's frustrating in light of the other things I think this game does quite well.

I'm not going to get into a argument with you TSamuelson1, which is obviously want you want. I have more important things to do, like practice my putting, I suggest you do the same.

I respect your opinion, Yankee. You've been here a long time, are a legend and have over 2,000 rounds to your name.

TSamuelson1, has obviously played every course on here several times and knows the geens like the back of his hand. He is happy that his putting skill is okay, so it must be the game's fault. Maybe, WGT could have a big arrow pointing to the hole so nobody can miss, because on a real course we all have dots and lines showing us the way to the hole and if we miss we blame the greenkeeper.

Heh- I don't think he's looking for a fight, Jason, he's just at that place where the putting DOES seemed all screwed up. I remember being there and thinking the same thing but I also saw others mastering it and getting their scores down. It's quite frustrating and daunting at the same time.

@TS-I don't usually take the time to look at profiles and stats in a conversation like this, others already do and I can get the idea of where the post is coming from for that. In your case I went to look and see where you're at in the progression so to help remember when I was there. I was a bit astounded to see only 81 putts recorded. The average per hole is what you would expect from a new player but I find it a little bit much to bang the game with so little experience.

Do yourself a favor and do the learning-it is what it is and will also become much more natural if you just rack up the putts. I have somewhere near 40,000 and I still think some parts of the putting are a little irritating but it doesn't get in the way of the fun. Maybe a little swear word or three but there's always the next hole.  :-)

Forget it.  Apparently reading comprehension is not the strong suit of many of the people in this "conversation," who keep responding to points that I am making it clear I am not making while ignoring the ones that I am (such as my earlier comment that I don't need a bunch of rolling balls/dots on a real green, because I can LOOK AT THE CONTOURS and see how the ball will roll).

Yankee, thanks for a thoughtful reply.  I understand I'm coming from the position of a new player, which is why I've tried repeatedly to make it clear that this is not "putting is hard," but "the putting system itself is kinda wack."  The "five backward movements" thing takes a lot of the smoothness out of it, and I think I've already covered the contour issue enough so I won't repeat myself.  I'll learn it and eventually master it, just like I've done in hundreds of other games over the years when faced with something that just doesn't work as well as it could.  But that won't change the issues I have with it, it will just make it less likely for those issues to trip me up.

(edited to fully respond to Yankee)

You just won yourself a cigar AND a Kewpie doll. You happened to have stumbled across exactly what makes putting tremendously fun for me on all the speeds. If you never learn anything else, learn this-speed is paramount and 90% of the putt.  Get the speed right and more often than not the putt will drop. Therein lies the rub-how do I get any kind of consistency in the putting stroke to get that speed right with all this jerking going on?

Read Nivlac's putting primer in the FAQs and you'll see how to actually take advantage of these jerks. It's called avatar move putting and it's the only way I have ever putted in the 4+ years I've played this game. It makes learning the speeds very easy because you have a solid, visual reference point that is the same every time.  To assign values to each move is a no-brainer and 20 or so putts on big greens like at BPB b9 will have you dialed in. Even better, using larger scales for shorter putts allows for a very short back swing and subsequent ding. Give it a look, I highly recommend it. GL

Thanks for the tip.  I read through it a couple of days ago, I'll definitely keep referring back to it as time goes on and my skill/equipment improves.  And I'll try out your "larger scales" recommendation in the round I just started.  :)
