    I have a question.

You are lying on the fairway and your approach to the pin is 102yds. Your iron is saying its a 110 yard hit to the pin (wind 90 deg from left so distance may not be affected only line).

    Do you:

    1. Use max backspin to try and slow the flight
    or
    2. Move the triangle thingy-me-bob back from the pin but the appropiate yardage

Thanks for the offer to help Couteney - appreciated

With the starter clubs, you going aim "into" the wind...depends on how much wind...but aim into it.

No worries if distance says 98 or 109 on the Triangle aimer, that has no bearing on ball distance.

Then hit you 110 club less than full power, take about 90% full swing...note where ball lands and how much roll out you get.

I've found with starter clubs and balls, using no spin (9 iron and down) is much more forgiving on FW approaches...just learn how much ball flight and roll..

Tip:...Watch the yardage get larger as you hit the ball...when you here a "thud" as it lands, note that distance with that club...i/e a full shot with you 110 iron may go 102 in the air, but roll out 10 yards...etc.

It seems Mbaggese has covered everything. Regarding the spin part every hole should be judged on it's merits, for instance on hole 1 on St Andrews you use no backspin while on hole 5 you'd want full back spin a tube of glue and a ships anchor to stop the ball.

So it's individual trial and error :)

With Starters, I finally used full bs on most of the shots except severly uphill...

At STA#5 it may be worth a try to lay up to get a full wedge shot.

    Thanks for the advice.

Fortunately, I have moved up a wee bit to the WGT Tour Started club - now just to get some credits for the next driver purchase

Are you saying to move the pointer to accomodate for wind or click left or right of the 'ding' to accomodate wind?

Thanks - distance has already improved

Yes...early on I found it more repeatable than just hitting late/early...but many player do not aim...or aim very little and hit late/early.

I stuck with aiming because "way back when" a WGT  mod spoke up that the most reliable shots were those "dinged"

Always, always, always miss the ding into the wind if you're going to miss it. As soon as you hit a pixel late or more WITH the wind you get instant full wind affect on the shot. Even dings a lot of the time will get affected more than you think  but you really improve your chances by missing smart.

With starter clubs and the like you shuld always try and hit maximum power, because the effect of taking a little off is very unpredictable, in fact the loss of distance is far more than you would expect.

Not like top level irons like the R11's

In other words taking 10% off ur 110 wedge does not mean u will go 100 yards, more likely 90 ++

Also the wind effect is lessened because the trajectory on starters is so low.
