    YankeeJim:
One rough "quickie estimate" that has always worked for me is to add 1 club to whatever the caddie suggests for 30/40 and 2 clubs for 40/50. This isn't exact and is for approach shots but will definitely get the right club in your hands for a full swing.
+1! Speaking of long punches, I give a tad less from 40/50, but that's marginal.

Less addition for the short clubs up to I9, gradually growing with length.

Other "rules" for me are, no 3WD from 40/50 (I don't carry the hybrid), and a special regard to the ball's track. These rescue punches will travel carry only 50%(?), therefore it's essential to have fairway available on the second half. Take the pill, play shorter if necessary, but put yourself into a good position for the next shot. The punch will also follow the track's contour with every bump, visualize this (e.g. BPB#13 with a good depression at the left-hand FW bunker).

For rough (mid iron lengths), i add half the lower pecentage as power to shot. So 30/40 rough I add 15% to power, with a few tweaks to suit course/hole/type of rough.

is that with the punch shot?

using this rule, are the rules for the wind the same?

    Evidence!

Of course, the longer you pray, the worse you stray!

(just a feeble rhyme try of a second-language fella!)

You can, however, and I often do, punch a 3wood with full backspin from anywhere from 30 - 50% rough to help save those stray drives on longer holes.  A substantial gain of up to 200 yards or more does wonders to help save par, or even birdie the hole.  Just make sure you have plenty of short grass in front of you so you don't get hung up again in the long stuff.

Yes, wind is wind and will still push the shot around.

You does not have to squeeze every yard out of driver.
In AS games I watch pro and tour pro do this. If they not finish in rough they is working out how to play shots like 39 yards with 15 strength 45 degree wind.
Example, level 94 pro( lol)  St Andrews 10 hole, hit drive 40 yards past flag to back of green.  His partner tell him vvn drive. Then have 120 foot putt with slope at end. My partner have 50 yard wedge to pin. We is birdie they is double the bogey....... after they vvn drive :)
At hole 12 he again hit drive 30 yards past flag. Again his partner have monster putt with steep slope. We is birdie they is bogey.
Hitting monster drives full spin forwards not always clever shot. Better play for position and try to have full wedge to the pin.

No, for full shots, when punching I usually go up a club or two automatically and then look more carefully at the conditions for the specific hole.
