I agree with CD - punch shot with top spin is the best bet. BUT play percentages and just try to get the ball back in play rather than trying the miracle shot..Playing the ball twenty yards out sideways is better than not getting the ball out.
The best way of avoiding the weeds is better course management, so before you hit work out the associated risks and change clubs if required. I used starters clubs for a year and many holes were not reachable in regulation, so Instead of just hitting as far as I could, I would try to leave a full wedge to the green etc and therefore remove hazards etc. But sure at times we miss the ding by a mile or get metered and thats when you learn.
Put the game into practice mode and try to find the weeds or deep rough and use mulligans - take notes to see what works best.
Also bear in mind different courses the "weeds" (or heavy rough) can play differently and only experience tells you the best way to negotiate it. Lastly, the better the clubs the better the results, but even with the best - always play percentages.
