The discretionary budget refers to the part of the federal budget proposed by the President, and debated and decided by Congress each year.

And maybe if you dug a little deeper, you'd realize the states take care of education spending, which is all part of the government bureaucracy. If the states didn't do it the feds certainly would.

I think the % for education you show is for grants and such for College students.

But unsure where the 58% number is derived from?

Do you have a link to the site you pulled the chart from?

So am I. 55% looks more like a total contribution to world military spending. As a % of GDP the US spends 3-4 % (pick your year) on military. Education it's spending is around 5.5%. This is all more comparable to any other developed nation including Canda., World Bank figs used as reference.

I am sure we all agree we want to spend more (and encourage more wisely in the case of our goverments often) for our kids futures,wherever we are, but the fruit is not as low as that.

Happy look at other charts.

Well no offense intended here, but, when 58% of your countries spending goes to the military and 4% goes to education, you can imagine things are only going to get worse.

In comparison, Canada spends 6% on Military and 12% on education.

Yes because when I think of education, I think of Canada.

Harvard, Yale, School of Wharton, Cooper University, Etc. They are all in Canada. No offense. 6 % on your military, didn't even know you had one.

Can't remember when I heard: "That man is brilliant he went to the University of Toronto" or "Lookout the Canadian Military is going to get involved".

I know some brilliant people of went to University if Toronto. I do not wish to under mind their success or their education, but just saying if I went to a job interview with a MBA from Wharton or Harvard, as compared to University of Toronto ( your highest ranking ), there would be no contest. No offense.

When I was in desert storm, I had the pleasure of serving with Brits and Aussies. I don't recall any Canadians with me. Your 6% really shows. No offense.

All that said, I do agree with one point you made though. Things are getting worse. Just remember, when and if we go down. Who will pick up our baby sister ??
