a thought when a player has one ball left from a particular group and that ball is taken out of play, a player should be able to choose another ball from his bag and not automatically be given the default ball

The true rules of golf state you start and finish with the same type of ball, therefore its upto yourself to supply said amount of balls, WGT actually offer 2 chances to finish your round, they remind you with 1 ball left that you are about to run out, and best of all , allow you to finish your round with a courteous free ball :-)

It may not seem it at the time, but appreciate the gesture of goodwill and sportsmanship ;-)

[You are wrong Mushy, the rules of golf do not state you start and finish with the same type of ball, if your ball goes out of bounds then you can replace it with any ball in your bag, if your ball gets damaged in real golf, you are allowed to replace it as long as your opponent knows the reason and agrees why you are changing your ball. I also agree that wgt should let players play which ever ball that they have in their equipment.

Also mushy  the offer of a free semi useless ball  is not courteous when you have good balls already in your bag.

The gesture of goodwill and sportsmanship works both ways.]

Ah, yes, the true rules of golf:

THE REAL, TRUE AND UN-EXAGGERATED RULES OF GOLF

    1. The game of golf is 90% mental and 10% mental.
    2. Since bad shots come in groups of three, a fourth bad shot is actually the beginning of the next group of three.
    3. Any change works for a maximum of three holes and a minimum of not at all.
    4. Never try to keep more than 300 separate thoughts in your mind during your swing.
    5. When your shot has to carry over a water hazard, you can either hit one more club or two more balls.
    6. If you're afraid a full shot might reach the green while the foursome ahead of you is still putting out, you have two options: you can immediately shank a lay-up, or you can wait until the green is clear and top a ball halfway there.
    7. The less skilled the player, the more likely he is to share his ideas about the golf swing.
    8. The inevitable result of any golf lesson is the instant elimination of the one critical unconscious motion that allowed you to compensate for all your errors.
    9. Everyone replaces his divot after a perfect approach shot.
    10. A golf match is a test of your skill against your opponent's luck.
    11. It's surprisingly easy to hole a 50-foot putt when you lie 10.
    12. Nonchalant putts count the same as chalant putts.
    13. It's not a gimme if you're still away.
    14. There are two kinds of bounces: unfair bounces, and bounces just the way you meant to play it.
    15. You can hit a 2-acre fairway 10% of the time, and a 2-inch branch 90% of the time.
    16. If you want to hit a 7-iron as far as Tiger Woods does, simply try to lay up just short of a water hazard.
    17. There are two things you can learn by stopping your back swing at the top and checking the position of your hands: how many hands you have, and which one is wearing the glove.
    18. You can put "draw" on the ball, you can put "fade" on the ball, but no golfer can put "straight" on the ball.
    19. A ball you can see in the rough from 50 yards away is not yours.
    20. If there is a ball in the fringe and a ball in the bunker, your ball is in the bunker.
    21. If both balls are in the bunker, yours is in the footprint.

I believe Mushy is talking about Tournament Golf where you have to play all the holes with the exact type ball. In practice mode I could underatand WGT allowing us to use whatever we have but in a tourney, you gotta play all the holes with the same ball. Otherwise folks would be switching out the ball in use depending on what shot they have. Allowing us to finish a ranked round with the rock is much better than a DQ IMO.

I understand exactly what your saying bud, but I treat every game on WGT as a tourney rule stroke play, as that is what I have come to expect as re-iterated in their rules I'm afraid :-(

hence if your balls are depleted you walk from the course.

    Please excuse me nitpicking, but

    - the "One Ball Rule" is not part of the genuine Rules of Golf, and

    - it's not being used by WGT IMHO (though it almost looks the same).

In the real game, the only imperative is to finish a hole with the ball you put on the tee.(rule 15), with some exemptions (e.g. ball lost, unplayable ball, ball in GUR). Players may change balls and ball types at those exempt situations and between two holes ad libitum.

The "One Ball Rule" is a special CoC named in Appendix I part C of the rules book. Thus, it'S not part of standard play. It's being used as an extra in professional and major amateur competitions and it includes that a player receives a DQ once he runs out of "his" type of balls. Remember Tin Cup?

WGT would be in breach of the latter condition if they'd apply this special CoC, allowing continuation with the Starter ball.

Me thinks that the reason behind this action is named in the OP's demand,

    jacktbaldwin:
a player should be able to choose another ball from his bag

In fact, there has not been a single choice in the game until recently (Mulligan in practice rounds). No choice to select a spot to drop, no choice to declare an unplayable ball, severe cuts into a player's rights. So why should they allow us to choose a replacement ball?

MisterWGT talked about this subject in last year's video chat and he did not mention the rule. He rather talked about difficult choices which WGT would have to make for the players...
