The game is rude and takes experience & time to progress. Each step will only be what only you make of it. For putting, experiment with hitting early or late to counter-act breaking putts. Best of luck.

    RJaco1:

any particular club-ball combination better than others?

Adding to the other good remarks:

    - ball roll depends on the green speed - "standard" equals the nominal distance.

    - putting distances are true to the scales from 1 to 100% (times green speed) and they are equal for all combinations.

    - the Starter putter is quite good until 30 feet distance. Further out it will stray a bit. My 2 Pfennig: Don't buy a custom putter below 500 crs.

    - meter speed depends on both putter and ball - any custom ball will be a lot slower than the Starter ball, custom putters have different speeds.

    - variations in putter characteristics like precision and forgiveness make the models either better for "ding" putting or "off-ding" putting. Take your time to find your style.

Level 45 I just got through playing 2 rounds at St.

    Have these clubs:

    Ping 9.5D

    Taylor Rocket Ballz Iron Set

    Taylor 64 Wdg

    Taylor Ghost Spider Putter

    Callaway Hex Chrome Balls

Shot an 88....got pissed off and took all the clubs that I had paid for and earned through waste of time surveys and back to starter clubs and shot 84. The more I play with these clubs, generally the worse I get.

    Yep.

Go to game tips....putting. Read some great tips, Nivlac, Stonecold Killer, Golds putting formula, the list is endless.

My worst issue is putting. Any advice to improve that?

Okay. This is the first time I've put this out there for general consumption.

The key to putting is reading the moving dots and knowing how long it will take for your putt to reach the hole. I didn't come up with this before TM tier, so I can only speak with certainty about Tourney greens. I'd suggest opening practice mode on a hole with a very flat green. Several good choices at StA and BPB. Time how long it takes to putt various distances. Don't trust your 1000 1, 1000 2 count. There are a bunch of free stopwatch downloads out there. I use the one from http://www.online-stopwatch.com/

When putting, when you switch to reverse view, the dots start off like they are in a race. Pick the one that's in the middle, speed wise. How far does it move in the time it will take for your putt to reach the hole? That's how far to aim left or right as appropriate. (If you've got all day, you could time all the dots and calculate an average, but the above down and dirty should decrease the number of 3 putts you card.) If putting uphill subtract a bit for each inch up. (You'll be hitting harder, so putt will get there a little earlier.) Putting downhill? Reverse is true, but exaggerated even more.

Double breaker? Find the dot for both breaks. Time them.Subtract. Just make sure you move the marker the correct direction. Yeah, I've messed that up once or twice when in a hurry.

Once you've got it down for flat greens, practice on one with some good ups and downs. Darn near anywhere on Oak will do. See how much each affects the tale of the dots.

Of course the old saw is still true. Forget putting. Learn to get your approach close and ram 'em home.

Two things you can do, and if you don't want your tier going up with stroke play, try practice rounds. Play blitz "Best of Putting".  The putts are long, but the games will have different green speeds at times.  Getting a feel for the longer putts at very fast, fast, standard, slow, and even tournament speed (if you play closest to the hole - best of putting) will help.  You have to mix in the stroke play practice rounds so you get normal putting distances to work on.  Toughest putts will always be the ones with up and down slopes along the way on a single stroke.  Have fun.

I have been playing for only a few hours now, and I feel the same frustration of the original poster.  The learning curve is far too steep to make me want to keep playing.

This game fails from the same reasons as every version of TW for playstation: the learning curve is way too steep.  I can play better in real life, and it feels like the more I play, the worse I get.

I know real golf is sometimes like that, but the starting point should be slightly higher, and the game would be much more rewarding.

I am willing to give it a few more hours, but I am already super bored.  I don't expect to be breaking 80 right away, but I do expect a consistent, predictable experience that is at least realistic.
