Just looking for any tips on using backspin going downhill. Playing Congressional #18 today and had the following result.

    Pin distance: 183 28' downhill = roughly 176. Wind 3mph South

Using Ping G20 with Callaway (33+) balls I have my 4i (200 yards) charted to land at 175 using full backspin.

Taking the shot with full backspin my ball overshot the green and landed in the water traveling over 205 in the air. Anybody got any helpful advice?

I have the G20's as well. 4i was way too much club for the distance with that much elevation drop. 5i(185) would have been my club of choice with nearly full BS. I almost never use 100% backspin. I only slide the dot down no more than equal with the bottom of the ball. Never below the bottom surface of the guide ball. On that hole I like to land short of the pin on the downslope and let the ball roll to the hole. Aiming a little right of the pin the ball will turn left on the downslope directly to the hole.

Playing with better clubs with a good amount of spin attribute added to the golf balls with a lot of spin attribute, the shot distance can be inconsistent to judge if playing in wind or elevation changes of a large degree. I've noticed backing off the backspin helps with judging distance. IMO... most players over-use 100% backspin for no reason once you get into the high level clubs. I look at the dot as the contact point between the center of the club on the back of the ball. I wouldn't want the dead center contact point to be below the ball resulting in a ballooned shot that comes up short. It's like hitting it fat with too much ground contact under the ball.

I agree. My observation has been that when I use full backspin, the longer irons tend to come up quite a bit shorter than you would expect.

The more back spin you add, the more the back spin shortens the shot.

The effect is amplified if you are playing into the wind or uphill.

Of course short irons and wedges may 'back up' some amount from where they land if full back spin is used.

I have started right clicking and using Zoom In to set the back spin for a shot, so I can set the back spin more precisely each time.

I too like to use full backspin. Here is a rough formula that I like to use which works pretty well.

add 5-7 automatically for full backspin.

add or subtract 50% for headwind or tailwind (ex. 15mph headwind = additional 7 to distance)

add or subtract 1/3 for elevation. (ex. 20ft downhill = 5 subtracted from distance.)

183 + 5(full backspin) - 1(half of 3 for tailwind) - (1/3 of down elevation). For crosswinds, you need to atleast double whatever the wind speed is. (ex. 15mph crosswind = atleast 30ft aim adjustment.)

Tweek the numbers until you get the right combination.

Another thing about using 100% B/S especially with the higher spin balls is that even a slight mishit can cause some big deviations.

I learned that from Priestess a few years ago. Priestess actually zoomed in twice in the videos that I watched.
