Is it possible to hit woods out of the rough, or should you always go with irons?

Can you use woods in the first cut of the rough and not the second?

I just played a round and had 190+ to the green in the second cut of rough. Played a full 3 wood and the shot went about 70 yards!

    PUNCH IT!!

And with top spin it rolls forever. Just make sure you aim accordingly as there isn't much carry.

Definitely true. Punch a 3 wood out of up to 40-50 and is will roll a long way.  It doesn't carry very far, however.  I have also used it at 50% power in situations where I needed to get out from low hanging limbs and wanted to hit it 120 or 130 onto the fairway

Punching on the fairway comes in handy, too, like on Merion #2 when you can't carry that trap that likes to grab your shot or #4 to keep away from the hazard at the end of the fairway.

I seen someone punch out of 40-50% with their driver and it worked! I've not been brave enough to try.
