Charles I is most famous for being beheaded by Parliament in 1649 after civil war rocked Britain. The path that led him to the scaffold, however, was long and torturous, full of missed opportunities and misplaced loyalties. Whatever his other failings may have been, above all Charles was simply on the wrong side of history; he wanted the sort of monarchy whose time had passed.
