    SweetiePie:
    1959 - Tom Lehman, PGA

Top notch person in my book too!  Our son, being a member of his HS golf team, was invited by the Phoenix Open to be a volunteer.  He got assigned as a caddy for an amateur during the Wed. Pro-Am.  In Tom Lehman's foursome.   Lehman, having overheard our son had recently had his birthday 3 weeks prior, wrote him a $50 check as a birthday present.

    What a nice, thoughtful gesture.

    8 March ...

    Notables:

    • In 1884, Susan B Anthony addresses the US House Judiciary Committee regarding a woman's right to vote.  Even then, it took the politicians 16 years before they even presented the Women's Suffrage Act to the floor.
    • Today is "International Women's Day.  It was originally launched in 1911 in Copenhagen Denmark by Clara Zetkin; the leader of the Women's Office for the Social Democratic Party in Germany.  It took another 34 years before this day was recognized by the US and GB.
    • In 1972, the "Goodyear Blimp" takes to the air for the very first time.
    • In 1883, IBM released "DOS version 2.0"

Edit:  1983 on the release of "DOS, version 2.0"  lol.

As for Alan Hale, Jr - I don't recall too many episodes of the series he was in ... but the theme song for the show, where he played "Skipper" is very popular ... how many can't finish this:

"Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip ..."

    Happy "International Women's Day" everyone!

Thanks, Don ... total typo on the date!

Yeah ... funny how even Aly (age 11) knows the lyrics, but has never seen Gilligan's Island.

You're welcome and yes its funny how children can commit things to memory so easily ... with me, well, let's just say I watched so many episodes of Gilligan's Island, that even now, many years later, I can recite the entire thing without a hitch.

Hadn't thought about that television show for ages .... other than Alan Hale, I can remember that the "millionaire" , Thurston Howell III, was played by a famous actor and cartoon character voice-person, named Jim Backus, and Mary Anne was played by a not so famous actress named Dawn Wells. I'm really showing my age ... lol ...

    SweetiePie:
1454 - Amerigo Vespucci, Italian Explorer

While Christopher Columbus received recognition for discovering the new continent, America received its name from Amerigo Vespucci.  He sailed under the Portugal flag.

Also, Will Geer (1902 - 1978) was born on March 9th.  Many remember him from his role as "Grandpa" on "The Waltons".

And, Ornette Coleman - 84, a great alto sax jazz musician and composer celebrates his birthday today.

    Great post, SP!
